Tom Shaer

Tom Shaer is familiar to viewers and listeners around the midwest through his 25 years on television and radio. The morning SportsCenter anchor on ESPN Radio 1000 in Chicago, Tom joined the ABC-owned station in 2002 after 12 years as a television anchor at NBC-owned WMAQ, Channel 5.

Tom brings knowledge and enthusiasm to his broadcasts, for which he has been recognized by Crain's Chicago Business in a survey to determine the best broadcasters in Chicago and by the Associated Press, which named his TV reports best in Illinois during 1999. Tom has also covered numerous major news stories for which he won an Emmy and a Peter Lisagor Journalism Award.

Tom arrived in Chicago in 1983 as co-host of a nightly program with Hall of Famer Jack Brickhouse on WGN-AM. He made his television debut on WGN-TV before joining CBS-owned WBBM radio, where he was morning sports anchor for five years, before moving to WMAQ-TV. During his years at NBC-5, he also hosted a popular morning show on all-sports WSCR radio. While at Emerson College in Boston, Tom began his broadcasting career there as a host of talk shows for WITS Radio from 1978-1982 and anchor for WJAR-TV (Providence, RI) after starting his journalism career as a correspondent for the Associated Press.

Tom is married with two children and resides in the suburbs north of Chicago. He is an avid golfer and student of twentieth century United States history, American media and men's health. He serves on the District 225 School Board, emcees numerous annual charitable galas and mentors young adults entering the field of broadcast communications.
