Topic: Healthcare Coverage
Question: Why do you have to contact my doctor for refills of maintenance medications? I was told I will be on this medication for the rest of my life.

Answer:When a doctor writes a prescription for a maintenance medication (a medication you will be taking for a long term), he or she determines the number of refills allowed. Certain medications require regular checkups and possibly laboratory tests by your doctor to ensure that:

§ you are taking the medicine properly.

§ it is working as it should and helping you the way it is intended.

§ it is not causing unexpected or life-threatening side effects.

State and federal guidelines regulate the number of refills you can get without having to recontact the doctor, as well as the period of time during which you can refill a prescription. If you have a pharmacy benefit as part of your healthcare coverage, you also may have restrictions on how many refills you can get and over what period of time.

Your Walgreens pharmacist will be happy to contact your doctor for refill authorization. Order your refill today.
