Topic: Health Conditions, Osteoporosis
Question: I have osteoporosis and take a prescription medication for it, plus calcium, every day. What else can I do to make my bones stronger?

Answer:For people with osteoporosis, exercising regularly can not only help bones become stronger, it can help slow bone loss. Physical activity helps to reduce the risk of fractures from falls and improves both balance and muscle strength. Weight-bearing exercises such as walking, jogging, and climbing stairs can help the bones in your legs and hips. You also should work to strengthen the bones and muscles in your arms and upper body.

If you are over 65 years old or you have severe osteoporosis, you should discuss an exercise regimen with your doctor before starting one on your own.

Since smoking can increase bone loss (not to mention cause other serious heart and lung problems), it is best to quit the habit. Avoiding excess alcohol and caffeine can also help, so try to minimize your intake.
