Ulcerative colitis is categorized according to location:

• Proctitis involves only the rectum.

• Proctosigmoiditis affects the rectum and sigmoid colon.

• Left-sided colitis encompasses the entire left side of the large intestine.

• Pancolitis inflames the entire colon.
