Common Uses: This medicine is a benzodiazepine used to treat panic disorder. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Before Using This Medicine: Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking delavirdine, itraconazole, ketoconazole, or sodium oxybate (GHB). ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking amiodarone, azole antifungals (eg, fluconazole), carbamazepine, cimetidine, clozapine, cyclosporine, diltiazem, ergot alkaloids (eg, ergotamine), fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), isoniazid, macrolide antibiotics (eg, clarithromycin, erythromycin), methadone, nefazodone, nicardipine, nifedipine, omeprazole, oral contraceptives (birth control pills), paroxetine, propoxyphene, protease inhibitors (eg, boceprevir, ritonavir), rifamycins (eg, rifampin), St. John's wort, telithromycin, tricyclic antidepressants (eg, desipramine, imipramine), or valproic acid. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including a history of seizures; glaucoma or increased pressure in the eye; kidney or liver problems; lung or breathing problems (eg, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease / COPD, sleep apnea); myasthenia gravis; other mental or mood problems (eg, depression); alcohol or other substance abuse or dependence; suicidal thoughts or actions; a blood disorder known as porphyria; allergies; pregnancy or if you are able to become pregnant; or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you are in poor health, are very overweight, or are experiencing abnormal muscle movements. Tell your doctor if you smoke or you drink alcohol. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have acute narrow-angle glaucoma. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using this medicine.
How to Use This Medicine: Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. TAKE THIS MEDICINE BY MOUTH WITH OR WITHOUT FOOD. If stomach upset occurs, take with food to reduce stomach irritation. SWALLOW WHOLE. Do not break, crush, or chew before swallowing. Eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while you are taking this medicine may increase the amount of this medicine in your blood, which may increase your risk for serious side effects. Talk with your doctor before including grapefruit or grapefruit juice in your diet. DO NOT SUDDENLY STOP taking this medicine. You may have an increased risk of side effects (eg, seizures). If you need to stop this medicine, your doctor will gradually lower your dose. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C), in a tightly closed container, away from heat, moisture, and light. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children and away from pets. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Cautions: DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it, to any ingredient in this product, or to another benzodiazepine (eg, diazepam). WHEN USED FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME or at high doses, this medicine may not work as well and may require higher doses to obtain the same effect as when originally taken. This is known as TOLERANCE. Talk with your doctor if this medicine stops working well. Do not take more than prescribed. SOME PEOPLE WHO USE THIS MEDICINE may develop a need to continue taking it. People who take higher doses (eg, some patients with panic disorder) or use this medicine for a long time have a greater risk. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or take this medicine for longer than prescribed. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine. This medicine may cause drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, or blurred vision. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL while you are using this medicine. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR before you use medicines that may cause drowsiness (eg, sleep aids, muscle relaxers) while you are using this medicine; it may add to their effects. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines may cause drowsiness. SMOKING MAY DECREASE this medicine's effectiveness. Tell your doctor if you smoke or if you have recently stopped smoking. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine, especially decreased coordination and drowsiness. FOR WOMEN: THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE HARM to the human fetus. IF YOU THINK YOU MAY BE PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.
Possible Side Effects: SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include changes in appetite, constipation, decreased sexual desire or ability, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, light-headedness, nausea, tiredness, or weight changes. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience behavior changes; blurred vision; burning, numbness, or tingling; chest pain; confusion; dark urine; decreased coordination; decreased urination; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; hallucinations; loss of balance or muscle control; memory or attention problems; menstrual changes; muscle twitching; new or worsening mental or mood changes (eg, depression, irritability, anxiety; exaggerated feeling of wellbeing); overstimulation; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; severe or persistent dizziness, drowsiness, or light-headedness; shortness of breath or trouble breathing; suicidal thoughts or actions; tremor; trouble speaking; or yellowing of the eyes or skin. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; or unusual hoarseness. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include confusion; loss of consciousness; loss of coordination; severe drowsiness or deep sleep; or slow reflexes.
Additional Information: DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions.
