Ingredient Name:DIGOXIN (di-JOX-in)
Common Uses:This medicine is a cardiac glycoside used to treat heart failure in certain patients. It is also used to slow the heart rate in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation, a type of irregular heartbeat. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Before Using This Medicine:Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking prescription or nonprescription medicines (eg, used for aches and pains; anxiety, depression, or other mental or mood problems; calcium supplement; cancer; diabetes; diarrhea; heartburn; high blood pressure, including in the lungs; high cholesterol; HIV infection; immune system suppression; infections; irregular heartbeat or other heart problems; low blood sodium levels; lung or breathing problems; osteoporosis; seizures; sleeping problems; stomach or bowel problems; thyroid problems), multivitamin products, or herbal or dietary supplements (eg, herbal teas, coenzyme Q10, garlic, ginseng, ginkgo, St. John's wort). Tell your doctor if you are taking medicines that may harm the kidney (eg, aminoglycoside antibiotics, such as gentamicin; amphotericin B; angiotensin-converting enzyme / ACE inhibitors, such as captopril; angiotensin receptor blockers, such as valsartan; cyclosporine; nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs / NSAIDs, such as celecoxib or ibuprofen; tacrolimus; vancomycin). Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure if any of your medicines might harm the kidney or might interact with this medicine. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including severe heart failure or a history of other heart problems (eg, inflammation, heart block, cor pulmonale, cardiomyopathy, amyloid heart disease), extra heart beats (premature ventricular contractions / PVCs), other types of irregular heartbeat, heart problems due to low thiamine (beriberi heart disease), Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, heart blood vessel problems, fainting due to a heart problem, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you have kidney, liver, or thyroid problems; absorption problems (eg chronic diarrhea); low blood oxygen levels (hypoxia); low blood levels of calcium, magnesium, or potassium; or high blood levels of potassium or calcium. Tell your doctor if you will be having a procedure to convert an irregular heartbeat to a normal heartbeat (cardioversion) or if you are receiving radiation therapy. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have recently had a heart attack or if you have inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis) or certain types of irregular heartbeat, such as ventricular fibrillation. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
How to Use This Medicine:Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE within 30 to 60 minutes of food high in fiber. IF YOU TAKE an antacid, cholestyramine, or colestipol, ask your doctor or pharmacist how to take it with this medicine. IF YOU ARE TAKING THE ELIXIR OR SOLUTION, use the dropper that comes with this medicine to measure your dose. Ask your pharmacist for help if you are unsure of how to measure your dose. STORE THIS MEDICINE at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C), in a tightly closed container, away from heat, moisture, and light. Brief storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children and away from pets. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Cautions:DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it, you are allergic to any ingredient in this product, or if you are allergic to other digitalis medicines. DO NOT CHANGE YOUR DOSE or stop taking this medicine without first checking with your doctor. LABORATORY AND/OR MEDICAL TESTS, including electrocardiogram (ECG), blood electrolyte levels, kidney function, and blood digoxin levels, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Keep all doctor and laboratory appointments while you are taking this medicine. THIS MEDICINE MAY AFFECT CERTAIN LAB TEST RESULTS, including an electrocardiogram (ECG) during exercise testing. Make sure laboratory personnel and your doctors know you use this medicine. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, emergency care, or surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking this medicine. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE DIZZINESS OR BLURRED VISION. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. CERTAIN MEDICINES (eg, spironolactone, canrenone, potassium canrenoate) and certain herbal supplements (eg, ginseng) may interfere with some blood digoxin level tests and give incorrect readings. Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know all of the medicines you are taking. IF YOUR DOCTOR HAS INSTRUCTED YOU to check your blood pressure and heart rate regularly, be sure to do so. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN NEWBORN INFANTS (especially premature or immature infants) because they may be more sensitive to the effects of this medicine. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU BECOME PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
Possible Side Effects:SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while using this medicine include diarrhea, dizziness, headache, or nausea. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience bloody or black, tarry stools; blurred vision, yellow-green vision, or other vision changes (eg, seeing halos); confusion; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; hallucinations; loss of appetite; mood or mental changes (eg, depression); severe or persistent diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain; stomach tenderness or swelling; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual tiredness or weakness; urgent need to have a bowel movement; or vomit that looks like coffee grounds. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, throat, or tongue. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. Overdose:POISONING MAY OCCUR IN CHILDREN WHO ACCIDENTALLY SWALLOW THIS MEDICINE or who receive too much of this medicine. IF OVERDOSE OR ACCIDENTAL INGESTION IS SUSPECTED, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; loss of appetite; severe nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain; unusual tiredness; vision changes (eg, blurred vision, seeing halos, yellow-green vision); or weight loss, drowsiness, or mental or mood problems in children.
Additional Information:DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions.
