Common Uses: This medicine is an aminoquinoline used to treat and suppress certain types of malaria. It is also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and lupus erythematosus. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Before Using This Medicine: Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking quinacrine. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are also taking mefloquine or medicines that may harm the liver (eg, acetaminophen, methotrexate). Check with your doctor if you are unsure if any of your medicines may harm your liver. TELL YOUR DOCTOR if you will be having a rabies vaccine. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, blood problems (eg, porphyria), psoriasis, stomach or bowel problems, liver or kidney disease, high blood acid levels, a central nervous system disease, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. TELL YOUR DOCTOR if you have a history of alcohol abuse or dependence. THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED for long-term use in children. Discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of giving this medicine to your child. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
How to Use This Medicine: Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. TAKE THIS MEDICINE with food or milk. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Cautions: DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or if you are allergic to any ingredient in this product. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including complete blood cell counts and eye tests, maybe performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking this medicine. Also, keep all appointments for eye examinations. IF POSSIBLE, preventative measures for malaria should begin 2 weeks before exposure and be continued for 8 weeks after leaving the endemic area. IF YOU ARE TAKING THIS MEDICINE FOR LUPUS OR ARTHRITIS, it may take 4 to 12 weeks for this medicine to work. Do not stop taking this medicine without checking with your doctor. IF YOUR SYMPTOMS DO NOT IMPROVE after several months or if they become worse, check with your doctor. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to this medicine. Use a sunscreen or protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR if you notice any muscle weakness or problems with vision or hearing. Your knee and ankle reflexes will be tested periodically. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE dizziness or blurred vision. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to this medicine. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN CHILDREN because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine. Accidental ingestion of this medicine in children has been fatal. Keep this medicine out of the reach of children. In case of an overdose, call a doctor or poison control center right away. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
Possible Side Effects: SIDE EFFECTS, that may go away during treatment, include headache, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite, or abdominal cramping. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience bizarre behavior; change in color of skin or inside of mouth; chest pain; difficulty seeing or reading (words, letters, or parts of objects missing when reading); fever or sore throat; hair loss; hearing loss; mental or mood changes; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; ringing in the ears; seizures; sensitivity to sunlight; symptoms of liver problems (eg, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, persistent nausea or stomach pain); unusual bleeding or bruising; unusual weakness; vision problems (eg, blurred vision, trouble focusing); or weight loss. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, contact your healthcare provider. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include blurred vision; severe drowsiness or dizziness; fainting; irregular heartbeat; headache; excessive excitability; slow, shallow breathing; seizures; and loss of consciousness.
Additional Information: DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
