Common Uses: This medicine is a decongestant and expectorant combination used to relieve congestion and to treat cough due to colds, flu, or hay fever. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Before Using This Medicine: Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are taking or have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (such as furazolidone, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, isocarboxazid, or tranylcypromine) within the past 14 days, or if you are taking droxidopa. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking methyldopa, beta-blockers (such as metoprolol), mecamylamine, reserpine, indomethacin, digoxin, entacapone, guanadrel, guanethidine, bromocriptine, tolcapone, or tricyclic antidepressants (such as amitriptyline or nortriptyline). DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including very slow or very fast heartbeat, overactive thyroid, heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney or liver problems, dialysis, peripheral vascular disease, diabetes, enlarged prostate, difficulty urinating, glaucoma, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have a history of severe high blood pressure, certain types of uncontrolled fast heartbeat (ventricular tachycardia), or severe coronary artery disease. Use of this medicine in children under age 6 is not recommended. Discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of giving this medicine to your child. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using this medicine.
How to Use This Medicine: FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS for using this medicine provided by your doctor or on the package. SWALLOW WHOLE. Do not crush or chew before swallowing. IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE SWALLOWING THE TABLET, check with your pharmacist. Some brands of this medicine may be broken in half and swallowed without crushing or chewing. TO HELP LOOSEN CONGESTION, drink a glass of water or other liquid with each dose of medicine unless directed otherwise by your doctor. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE and you are using it regularly, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Cautions: DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or if you are allergic to any ingredient in this product. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or use for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking this medicine. THIS MEDICINE MAY INTERFERE with certain lab test results. Make sure that all of your doctors and laboratory personnel know that you are taking this medicine. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE DIZZINESS. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. This includes other cough-and-cold products. DO NOT TAKE DIET OR APPETITE CONTROL MEDICINES while you are taking this medicine without checking with your doctor. IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE SLEEPING, ask your pharmacist or doctor about the best time to take this medicine. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING this medicine in children and the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of this medicine. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while using this medicine.
Possible Side Effects: SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include nervousness, dizziness, excitability, trouble sleeping, nausea, vomiting, or headache. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience involuntary trembling, unusual weakness or fatigue, difficult or painful urination, or mental or mood changes. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience a fast or irregular heartbeat; fainting, hallucinations; severe dizziness, light-headedness, or headache; or seizures. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, contact your healthcare provider. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include confusion, hallucinations, seizures, severe dizziness, unusual restlessness or nervousness, severe or persistent headache, fast or irregular heartbeat, stomach cramps, and unusual weakness.
Additional Information: If your symptoms do not improve within 7 days, if they get worse, or if you develop a high fever or persistent headache, check with your doctor. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children.
