Common Uses:

This medicine is a salicylate used to treat ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, or polyarticular-course juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in certain patients. It may be used along with other medicines. It is also used to increase the time between attacks of ulcerative colitis. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Before Using This Medicine:

Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), methotrexate, beta-blockers (eg, propranolol), digoxin, folic acid, or methenamine. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including liver or kidney problems, asthma, blood problems (eg, anemia, low white blood cell levels), thyroid problems, rheumatoid arthritis, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you have an infection (eg, strep throat), an infection that keeps coming back, or a history of infections. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have the blood disorder porphyria; a stomach, bowel, or urinary tract blockage; or if the patient has systemic-course juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IN CHILDREN under 2 years old is not recommended. Discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of giving this medicine to your child. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using this medicine.

How to Use This Medicine:

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. SWALLOW WHOLE. Do not break, crush, or chew before swallowing. TAKE THIS MEDICINE AFTER MEALS with a full glass of water. DRINKING EXTRA FLUIDS while you are taking this medicine is recommended. Check with your doctor or nurse for instructions. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light. Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children and away from pets. Take this medicine regularly to receive the most benefit from it. CONTINUE TO TAKE THIS MEDICINE even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Cautions:

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or if you are allergic to any ingredient in this product, salicylates (eg, aspirin), or sulfonamides (eg, sulfamethoxazole). A severe reaction includes a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, or dizziness. If you have a question about whether you are allergic to this medicine, contact your doctor or pharmacist. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE without checking with your doctor. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including liver function, kidney function, complete blood cell counts, and urine tests, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are using this medicine. THIS MEDICINE MAY INTERFERE with certain lab tests. Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know you are taking this medicine. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking this medicine. This medicine may cause drowsiness or dizziness. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun or sunlamps until you know how you react to this medicine. Use a sunscreen or protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE a harmless, yellow-orange discoloration of the urine or skin. IF YOU SEE THE TABLET IN YOUR STOOL, contact your doctor right away. IF YOU EXPERIENCE difficulty breathing or tightness of chest; swelling of eyelids, face, or lips; or develop a rash or hives, tell your doctor immediately and before taking any more of this medicine. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to the effects of this medicine. FOR MEN: SOME MEN TAKING THIS MEDICINE HAVE DEVELOPED A DECREASED NUMBER OF SPERM OR INFERTILITY. These effects usually went away after this medicine was stopped. Discuss any questions or concerns with your doctor. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby. DIABETES PATIENTS: This medicine may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely. Ask your doctor before you change the dose of your diabetes medicine.

Possible Side Effects:

SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include headache, loss of appetite, mild stomach upset or pain, nausea, or vomiting. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. SEVERE AND SOMETIMES FATAL ALLERGIC REACTIONS, infections, heart problems, kidney problems, liver problems, lung problems, blood problems, and permanent nerve or muscle problems have happened in patients taking this medicine. Talk with your doctor for more information. A VERY BAD SKIN REACTION (Stevens-Johnson syndrome / toxic epidermal necrolysis) may happen. It can cause very bad health problems that may not go away and sometimes death. Get medical help right away if you have signs like red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin (with or without fever); red or irritated eyes; or sores in your mouth, throat, nose, or eyes. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience bloody diarrhea; bluish discoloration of the skin or nails; chest pain; decreased urination; hearing loss; irregular heartbeat; mental or mood changes; muscle pain; numbness or tingling in the fingers or toes; seizures; severe or persistent dizziness, drowsiness, headache, or trouble sleeping; severe or persistent stomach pain; shortness of breath; swelling or soreness of the mouth or tongue; swollen glands; symptoms of infection (eg, fever, chills, cough, or sore throat; difficult or painful urination); symptoms of liver problems (eg, yellowing of the skin or eyes; dark urine; pale stools; severe or persistent nausea or vomiting; persistent loss of appetite); trouble walking; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual tiredness or weakness; or unusually pale skin. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. An allergic reaction to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing or swallowing; tightness in the chest; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, throat, or tongue; or unusual hoarseness. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, contact your healthcare provider. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Overdose:

IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Additional Information:

If your symptoms do not improve within a few weeks or if they become worse, check with your doctor. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out. CHECK WITH YOUR PHARMACIST about how to dispose of unused medicine.
