Common Uses:This medicine is a narcotic analgesic used to treat severe pain.
Before Using This Medicine:Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking sodium oxybate (GHB) or a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (eg, phenelzine), or if you have taken an MAOI within the past 14 days. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking anticholinergics (eg, scopolamine, oxybutynin), antihistamines (eg, diphenhydramine), anti-nausea medicines (eg, ondansetron), benzodiazepines (eg, lorazepam), cimetidine, fluoxetine, ketorolac, mexiletine, mixed narcotic agonists/antagonists (eg, buprenorphine, butorphanol, pentazocine), naltrexone, other narcotic pain medicines (eg, hydrocodone), phenothiazines (eg, chlorpromazine), quinidine, rifamycins (eg, rifampin), risperidone, skeletal muscle relaxants (eg, cyclobenzaprine), sleep medicines (eg, zolpidem), tricyclic antidepressants (eg, amitriptyline), or trovafloxacin. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or other lung or breathing problems; increased pressure in the head; a recent head injury; growths in the brain (eg, tumors, lesions); severe drowsiness; low blood volume; stomach pain; very poor health; allergies; pregnancy; or breast-feeding. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU HAVE a history of heart problems (eg, cor pulmonale), liver or kidney problems, thyroid problems, stomach or bowel problems (eg, constipation, blockage, inflammation), gallbladder or pancreas problems, prostate problems, trouble urinating, adrenal gland problems (eg, Addison disease), hypoxia (not enough oxygen in your body), hypercapnia or hypercarbia (high blood levels of carbon dioxide), curvature of the spine, seizures, mental or mood problems (eg, depression), hallucinations, suicidal thoughts or actions, alcohol or other substance abuse or dependence, or stomach or intestinal surgery. TELL YOUR DOCTOR if you will be having surgery; are currently in alcohol withdrawal; or if you are in shock caused by heart problems, blood vessel problems, or severe bleeding. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if you are having an asthma attack or if you drink alcohol. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have known or suspected bowel blockage (eg, paralytic ileus), severe or persistent diarrhea associated with antibiotic use (pseudomembranous colitis), slow or difficult breathing, severe asthma, or severe hypercarbia or hypercapnia. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
How to Use This Medicine:Use this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor. WASH YOUR HANDS before and after you use this medicine. IF THE SUPPOSITORY IS TOO SOFT TO USE, put it in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes or run cold water over it. Then remove the wrapper and moisten the suppository with cool water. Lie down on your side. Use your finger to push the pointed end of the suppository well up into the rectum. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C), in a tightly closed container, away from heat, moisture, and light. IF THIS MEDICINE IS NO LONGER NEEDED, dispose of it as soon as possible. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how to dispose of this medicine properly. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children and away from pets. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE and you are using it regularly, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.
Cautions:DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or if you are allergic to any ingredient in this product. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE TAKING THIS MEDICINE if you have had a severe allergic reaction to any morphine or codeine related medicine (eg, hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone). If you have questions about whether you are allergic to this medicine or if a certain medicine is morphine or codeine related, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including liver, kidney, and lung function, and complete blood cell counts, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking this medicine. WHEN USED FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, this medicine may not work as well and may require different dosing. Talk with your doctor if this medicine stops working well. DO NOT take more than the recommended dose or change your dose without first checking with your doctor. The risk of this medicine becoming habit-forming may be greater if you take it in high doses or for a long time. DO NOT SUDDENLY STOP taking this medicine without checking with your doctor. If you have been taking this medicine for more than a few weeks and your doctor tells you to stop using this medicine, your dose may need to be gradually lowered as directed by your doctor to avoid side effects. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine. DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL while you are using this medicine. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR before you use medicines that may cause drowsiness (eg, sleep aids, muscle relaxers) while you are using this medicine; it may add to their effects. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines may cause drowsiness. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. Alcohol, hot weather, exercise, and fever can increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Also, sit or lie down at the first sign of these effects. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine, especially drowsiness or breathing problems. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.
Possible Side Effects:SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while using this medicine include dizziness, drowsiness, headache, lightheadedness, nausea, restless mood, sweating, or vomiting. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONSTIPATION IS A COMMON SIDE EFFECT of this medicine. To prevent constipation, maintain a diet adequate in fiber, drink plenty of water, and exercise. Talk to your doctor about using fiber laxatives or stool softeners to prevent or treat constipation while you use this medicine. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience confusion; disorientation; fainting; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; hallucinations; mental or mood changes (eg, agitation, exaggerated sense of well-being); seizures; severe or persistent constipation or stomach pain; severe or persistent dizziness, drowsiness, or headache; shortness of breath; slow or shallow breathing; sudden chest pain; swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet; trouble urinating; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual tiredness or weakness; or vision changes (eg, blurred vision). AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, throat, or tongue. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. Overdose:IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include bluish skin or nails; cold and clammy skin; coma; confusion; decreased muscle tone; decreased pupil size; loss of consciousness; low body temperature; seizures; severe drowsiness, dizziness, or lightheadedness; severe muscle pain or weakness; shortness of breath; slow heartbeat; slow or shallow breathing.
Additional Information:DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out. IF THIS MEDICINE IS NO LONGER NEEDED, dispose of it as soon as possible.
