Common Uses:This medicine is an azole antifungal agent used to treat fungal infections.
Before Using This Medicine:WARNING: This medicine has been shown to cause decreased heart function. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of congestive heart failure, such as swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet; shortness of breath; or sudden, unexplained weight gain. Use of this medicine along with certain other medicines may increase the risk of their side effects. This may include serious and sometimes fatal heart problems (eg, irregular heartbeat). DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking cisapride, dofetilide, ergot alkaloids (eg, dihydroergotamine, ergotamine, methylergonovine), felodipine, levacetylmethadol (levomethadyl), lovastatin, methadone, oral midazolam, nisoldipine, pimozide, quinidine, simvastatin, or triazolam. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking alfuzosin, aliskiren, alprazolam, apixaban, cabazitaxel, conivaptan, crizotinib, domperidone, dronedarone, eplerenone, erythromycin, everolimus, ivabradine, lurasidone, nevirapine, ranolazine, rifabutin, rifampin, rivaroxaban, salmeterol, silodosin, sirolimus, tamsulosin, ticagrelor, or tolvaptan. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking other prescription or nonprescription medicines (eg, used for allergies; anxiety, depression, or other mental or mood problems; asthma or other lung or breathing problems; blood thinning; blood vessel problems; cancer; Cushing syndrome; cystic fibrosis; diabetes; emergency contraception; erectile dysfunction; gout; heartburn; hepatitis C virus infection; high blood pressure; high cholesterol; HIV infection; hormonal birth control, such as birth control pills; immune system suppression; infections; inflammation; irregular heartbeat or other heart problems; migraine headaches; nausea and vomiting; overactive bladder or other urinary problems; pain; parathyroid gland problems; prostate problems; seizures; sleep), multivitamin products, or herbal or dietary supplements. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure if any of your medicines might interact with this medicine. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including HIV infection, a weakened immune system, low white blood cell levels, cystic fibrosis, kidney problems, liver problems, abnormal liver function tests, lung or breathing problems (eg, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease / COPD), low stomach acid (eg, hypochlorhydria), nerve problems, problems with swelling or retaining fluid, an irregular heartbeat or other heart problems (eg, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, heart valve problems), allergies, pregnancy,breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you have had serious liver problems caused by this medicine or other medicines. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
How to Use This Medicine:Use this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor. Take this medicine on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating, if possible. Use a measuring device marked for medicine dosing. Ask your pharmacist for help if you are unsure of how to measure this dose. If you are using this medicine to treat a mouth, throat, or esophagus infection, SWISH THIS MEDICINE around the entire mouth. Retain the dose in your mouth as long as possible before swallowing, unless directed otherwise by your doctor. DO NOT TAKE ANTACIDS within 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking this medicine. Do not take eletriptan within 72 hours after taking this medicine. If you also take didanosine or a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) (eg, omeprazole), ask your doctor or pharmacist how to take it with this medicine. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature below 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light. Do not freeze. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children and away from pets. This medicine works best if it is taken at the same time each day. BE SURE TO USE THIS MEDICINE for the full course of treatment. If you do not, the medicine may not clear up your infection completely. The fungus could also become less sensitive to this or other medicines. This could make the infection harder to treat in the future. Do not miss any doses. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Cautions:DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. BEFORE USING THIS MEDICINE, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any other azole antifungal (eg, fluconazole). THIS MEDICINE ONLY WORKS AGAINST FUNGI; it does not treat viral infections (eg, the common cold). CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR if your condition does not improve or if it worsens. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or take this medicine for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including liver function tests, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking this medicine. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine. This medicine may cause dizziness. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. RARELY, THIS MEDICINE has been associated with serious, sometimes fatal liver problems, including some cases within the first week of treatment. Contact your doctor right away if you notice dark urine; loss of appetite; pale stools; severe stomach pain; unusual tiredness, nausea, or vomiting; or yellowing of the skin or eyes. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. DO NOT SWITCH between the capsule and oral solution forms of this medicine without checking with your doctor. Effectiveness and side effects of these forms of this medicine may be different, even at the same dose. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine. FOR WOMEN: HORMONAL BIRTH CONTROL (eg, birth control pills) may not work as well while you are using this medicine. To prevent pregnancy, use an extra form of birth control (eg, condoms). IF YOU ARE USING THIS MEDICINE to treat a fungal infection of the toenail or fingernail, use an effective form of birth control while you are taking this medicine and for 2 months after you have stopped treatment. Talk with your doctor about effective forms of birth control. IT IS NOT KNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE CAN CAUSE HARM to the human fetus. IF YOU BECOME PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby. DIABETES PATIENTS: This medicine may increase the risk of low blood sugar from your diabetes medicine. Check blood sugar levelsclosely and ask your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine.
Possible Side Effects:SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include diarrhea, dizziness, gas, headache, indigestion, mild stomach pain, nausea, runny nose, stomach upset, unpleasant taste, or vomiting. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. HEARING LOSS HAS BEEN REPORTED in patients taking this medicine. Many of these cases have occurred when this medicine has been taken along with quinidine. The hearing loss usually goes away when this medicine is stopped, but may persist in some patients. Contact your doctor if you experience hearing loss. Discuss any questions or concerns with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience blood in the urine; breast growth or pain; changes in the amount of urine produced or uncontrolled urination; chest pain; coughing up white or pink mucus; decreased sexual ability; depression; difficulty swallowing; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or persistent cough or sore throat; hair loss; joint pain; menstrual problems; muscle pain, weakness, or cramping; numbness, burning, or tingling of the hands, arms, legs, or feet; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; ringing in the ears; sensitivity to sunlight; severe or persistent dizziness; severe stomach or back pain (with or without nausea or vomiting); shortness of breath; sudden, unexplained weight changes; swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet; symptoms of liver problems (eg, dark urine; loss of appetite; pale stools; severe stomach pain; unusual tiredness, nausea, or vomiting; yellowing of the skin or eyes); tremors; trouble sleeping; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual tiredness or fatigue; very dry mouth or eyes; or vision problems (eg, blurred vision, double vision). AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue. Overdose:If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
