Common Uses:

This medicine is an antirheumatic agent used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Before Using This Medicine:

WARNING: This medicine has a risk of toxic reactions associated with its use ranging from severe to fatal. It is important to know the symptoms, which may include the following: blood in the urine, easy bruising or bleeding, itching, hives, rash, mouth sores, or persistent diarrhea. Be sure to discuss with your doctor what effects and symptoms to look for while taking this medicine. Lab tests will be required to monitor therapy. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking penicillamine. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including diabetes; congestive heart failure or other heart problems; circulation problems; high blood pressure; Sjogren syndrome; liver or kidney problems; lupus; itching, dryness, peeling, or a skin rash (eg, eczema, hives); a history of blood problems (eg, anemia); allergies; pregnancy; or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you bleed easily or if you have recently had radiation therapy. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using this medicine.

How to Use This Medicine:

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine is usually administered as an injection at your doctor's office or a clinic. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this medicine. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if it contains particles, is cloudy or discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged. STORE THIS MEDICINE as directed on the prescription label. KEEP THIS PRODUCT, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and pets. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. DO NOT use 2 doses at once.

Cautions:

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it, if you are allergic to any ingredient in this product, or if you have had a severe reaction to previous exposure to gold or other heavy metals. LABORATORY AND/OR MEDICAL TESTS may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Keep all doctor and laboratory appointments while you are using this medicine. THREE TO 6 MONTHS may pass before you feel the full effect of this medicine. Continue receiving injections during this time. JOINT PAIN MAY BE WORSE for 1 or 2 days after your injection but it should end after the first few injections. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun or sunlamps until you know how you react to this medicine. Use a sunscreen or protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period. THIS MEDICINE MAY REDUCE THE NUMBER OF BLOOD CELLS THAT ARE NEEDED FOR CLOTTING. To prevent bleeding, avoid situations where bruising or injury may occur. AFTER YOU RECEIVE AN INJECTION, you may experience flushing, dizziness, or sweating. If you lie down for a few minutes, these effects will usually disappear. If they continue, check with your doctor. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU BECOME PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.

Possible Side Effects:

A SIDE EFFECT that may occur while using this medicine is stomach cramps. If it continues or is bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience blood in the urine; cough; dark urine; decreased urination; fainting; fast or slow heartbeat; fever, chills, or sore throat; flushing of the skin; metallic taste; mouth sores; nausea; pain or numbness in the hands or feet; persistent diarrhea; purple blotches or other skin spots; redness or peeling of the skin; seizures; severe or persistent stomach pain; shortness of breath; thickening of the tongue; unusual bleeding or bruising; unusual tiredness or weakness; vision problems; vomiting; or yellowing of the skin or eyes. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing or swallowing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; or unusual hoarseness. If you notice any unusual effects, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. Overdose:

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Additional Information:

DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist to explain local regulations for selecting an appropriate container and properly disposing of the container when it is full.
