Ingredient Name:ZAFIRLUKAST (za-FIR-loo-kast)
Common Uses:This medicine is a leukotriene receptor antagonist used for the prevention and long term treatment of asthma in patients 5 years of age and older. This medicine may be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Before Using This Medicine:Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), calcium channel blockers (eg, amlodipine), certain anticonvulsants (eg, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin), cisapride, cyclosporine, erythromycin, fluconazole, theophylline, or tolbutamide. Tell your doctor if you have been taking a steroid (eg, prednisone) and will be stopping it or lowering its dose. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including a history of liver problems, mental or mood problems (eg, depression), suicidal thoughts or actions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have liver problems (eg, cirrhosis). Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
How to Use This Medicine:Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. AN ADDITIONAL PATIENT INFORMATION LEAFLET is available with this medicine. Read it carefully. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this medicine. Take this medicine on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating. Taking this medicine at the same time each day will help you to remember to take it. Take this medicine regularly to receive the most benefit from it. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C), in a tightly-closed container, away from heat, moisture, and light. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children and away from pets. CONTINUE TO TAKE THIS MEDICINE even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. DO NOT take 2 doses at once.
Cautions:DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or if you are allergic to any ingredient in this product. THIS MEDICINE WILL NOT STOP AN ASTHMA ATTACK once one has started. IF YOU ARE ALSO USING A BRONCHODILATOR INHALER, be sure to always carry the bronchodilator inhaler with you to use during asthma attacks. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IF YOUR SYMPTOMS DO NOT IMPROVE or if they become worse while you are using this medicine. DO NOT DECREASE YOUR DOSE OR STOP USING THIS MEDICINE or other asthma medicines without first checking with your doctor. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including liver function tests, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are using this medicine. THIS MEDICINE MAY RARELY CAUSE severe and sometimes fatal liver problems. Tell your doctor right away if you experience symptoms of liver problems (eg, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, flu-like symptoms, itching, loss of appetite, persistent nausea or stomach pain, unusual tiredness). IF YOUR DOCTOR TELLS YOU THAT YOU HAVE HAD LIVER DAMAGE DUE TO USE OF THIS MEDICINE, do not take this medicine again. SOME PATIENTS TAKING THIS MEDICINE HAVE DEVELOPED MENTAL OR MOOD CHANGES. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms such as agitation, aggression, hostility, anxiety, depression, strange dreams, trouble sleeping, sleepwalking, tremor, hallucinations, restlessness, irritability, or any unusual change in mood or behavior. Contact your doctor immediately if any signs of suicidal thoughts or actions occur. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.
Possible Side Effects:SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include nausea, headache, mild stomach pain, or diarrhea. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience burning, numbness, or tingling of the skin, hands, or feet; chest pain; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; joint or muscle aches and pains; mental or mood changes (eg, agitation, aggression, hostility, anxiety, depression, severe or persistent trouble sleeping, strange dreams, sleepwalking, tremor, hallucinations, restlessness, irritability, any unusual change in behavior); new or worsening shortness of breath or other breathing problems; suicidal thoughts or actions; swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet; symptoms of liver problems (eg, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, flu-like symptoms, itching, loss of appetite, persistent nausea or stomach pain, unusual tiredness); unusual bruising or bleeding; or unusual sinus pain or swelling. An allergic reaction to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; blisters; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; or unusual hoarseness. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, contact your healthcare provider. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
Overdose:If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include rash or stomach upset.
Additional Information:DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out. CHECK WITH YOUR PHARMACIST about how to dispose of unused medicine.
