Zinc Supplements

Zinc is the second most common mineral that you usually get through the foods that you eat. Zinc has been used for centuries to help heal wounds. It also is important to your immune system, which helps to fight infections in your body. Zinc also plays a part in many other things for your body. It plays a role in your growth, taste, vision, smell, and thyroid function. Zinc is also an antioxidant, which means that it helps cells to fight the damage done by free radicals. Most free radicals are from fried foods, smoking, pollution or the normal breakdown of food. Too many free radicals raise the risk of heart disease and cancer. Most people have enough zinc but low levels are sometimes seen in the elderly, alcoholics, and people with poor diets. People who have trouble getting nutrition through their body, such as Crohn's disease or celiac disease, may also not have enough zinc in their system. There have been some studies that show zinc acetate or gluconate lozenges can help to reduce the length of time that you have a cold. There was one study that showed that people who used zinc gluconate during the early part of a cold had the cold for a shorter time. These signs included coughing, runny nose, and sore throat. There was also a study that showed that people in a nursing home who used zinc supplements had fewer colds. Fewer people also got pneumonia. More and better studies are needed to find out how zinc can be used to help people.

Choosing Zinc Supplements

Walgreens offers a vast selection of zinc supplements, which allows people to easily find something that suits their specific needs. For children and adults who may have difficulty swallowing pills, tasty zinc gummies and lozenges are available. We also offer zinc supplements with blends of vitamins and minerals. Calcium and magnesium are often included in zinc supplements. As always, consult with your doctor or pharmacist before starting any supplements to be sure they are right for you. Discuss your medical history and medications, including prescriptions, over the counter medicines and other supplements. Once you determine which zinc supplement is right for you, visit walgreens.com. We will have what you need.
