Coursework + clinics = solid future pharmacists
We all can learn valuable facts and figures from textbooks. But when you take the lesson plan outside the classroom, it can sometimes start to shape your life. Take the University of Connecticut, where 100 first-year pharmacy students ventured out to Walgreens locations throughout the area.
In 2008, Connecticut pharmacists were allowed to administer immunizations. With new laws on the books, Walgreens district pharmacy supervisor Rob Braley thought this could be a unique way to fuse coursework with clinics. So, he approached U Conn’s pharmacy school about students participating in flu clinics. After hours of training, research and coordinating, that idea became reality.
All 100 students counseled patients about health issues, fielded questions about the flu immunization and, in some instances, translated the questions in Spanish and Polish for non-English speaking patients.
