Lessons learned in life

Photo of Walgreens employee Jeff Chadwick tutoring Midtown Educational Foundation studentAfter a long week dealing with work, family and errands – it’s nice to know the weekend offers time to rest, relax and recharge. For Walgreens employee Jeff Chadwick, giving up a portion of his weekend to help inner-city kids build brighter futures is worth the sacrifice.

“Roundtrip, I’m driving about 60 miles but in the end, you forget about the drive time and you realize the quality time you are spending is helping to change a child’s life,” said Chadwick.

Chadwick volunteers at Midtown Educational Foundation in Chicago. For six years, he’s made the trek to help grade school students brush up on reading and math. Students bring in homework, but it isn’t always about hitting the books. They learn about sports, arts and crafts and how to develop character.

Since 1993, Walgreens has given more than $2.7 million to Midtown as part of the company’s commitment to education.

“Sometimes we talk about how to make friends, how to handle things at home, how your actions today will transform your tomorrow,” said Chadwick. “These kids are bright. They just need that extra push and support to realize they can make it. I may be the mentor but find myself learning more every day about the importance of volunteering and showing that you care.”
