Best thing since wireless. I bought it when I was going to pay for a prepaid cell phone card. So I thought that for [$] it would beat the card because I had some bills to pay and they would eat up my minutes. Due to not having a regular phone. I hardly ever use it.I decided in a few more days I would need another $20 card for minutes. So, I bought it easy to install just plug it in the USB port and plug a phone in.Works. Dialed my sister long distance right off..now if they can get me to go through the magic jack for obtaining the internet.

First the cons, if it breaks, you loose your phone number. Sometimes calls don't connect as well as you'd like (maybe 20% of time). [$] charge after first year of service.Pros, great for business travelers (instead of cell phone). I've connected at a dunkin donuts. Works perfectr 80% of time, usually you can tell before you call if there will be problems. NO phone bills, I saved over 1000 using it in two years. Great if you want to use as second home phone for long distance calls. I was very skepitical before I bought mine, it worked great!

My wife and I currently reside in Spain. We just came back from the states where I picked up the magic jack. So far it works great. We are able to call home with no problems. We are canceling our v vonage account. Our internet connection here is slow so I know it is not an issue with magic jack but with our provider. I highly recommend this product especially if you are military living or deploying overseas.

Excellent voice quality. Works best if you have a wired high-speed internet connection. Requires you to dial 10 digit phone numbers. Magic Jack's desktop window is useful - shows caller ID, and allows you to create a contacts file, etc. But the desktop window is 1/3rd advertising for magic jack. My phone's caller ID only displays the number (no name). Runs well on my 8 year old XP laptop. Voice mail has lots of useful options. I plan on taking my Magic Jack, laptop, and phone on vacation this spring - I'll hook my laptop up to the free in-room HS internet and enjoy totally free calls and answering my home phone at the hotel.

I have been very impressed with the Magic Jack. It was very easy to get it going. Great option for college students, and anyone that doesn't have cell phone service at home etc. One great feature is that any time you receive a voice mail it is emailed to you in an audio file with the phone number and time the person called.

Great invention. We setup 5 units for 5 relatives & friends in separate locations. They all work great. My households saved $300/mo in average. My 2 brother-in-law saved similar amount respectively. Our friend from Texas saved $600 (at least) per month calling the Philippines.
Just couldn't ask for more. Been using it for almost a year now. THANK YOU MJ. :)

I was very excited to find out that my local Walgreens sold the Magic Jack. I was also excited about the cost. I will say the ease of installation was nice. BUT and this is the big one it doesn't work. I actually read some reviews before I bought it and told myself to buy it. I have a brand new computer so I know it wasn't a computer issue. I tried to make calls and it worked but it had horrible static and an echo. I couldn't understand anyone. Then when people tried to call me it wouldn't ring or the one time it did I answered and nothing! I contacted their online support and she had me change some setting on my computer and then it worked for ONE call.. I was very excited. But soon after it started the same thing! I contacted support again and told them I wanted a refund. Luckily my local Walgreen's was more than happy to return it and refund my money. I would have loved for this product to work! I guess it was too good to be true.

Comments about magicJack magicJack Phone to PC Device - Talk for FREE! 1ea.:

I was a little concerned about buying a MagicJack after reading the reviews, but one of them put my mind at ease when he said he bought one, it didn't work like he expected, so he returned it for a refund. Well I won't be taking mine back. This thing is awesome. The sound clarity is MUCH better than my local phone company and after canceling my home phone service and just keeping my DSL line, I am saving $528 per year. That's right... Instead of my $88 per month bill for home phone and DSL, I am only paying $44 per month for DSL only and $20 per year for my MagicJack. I am not crazy about the fact that I had to choose another phone number with a different area code than my current area code, but considering that I use my cell phone most of the time and the only reason for the MagicJack is to save money by giving me a way to call or receive calls without using my minutes, I am extremely satisfied. MagicJack will also allow me to change my phone number once at no charge. So when my area code does become available, I will just simply change my number again. Something I didn't find in a review is the voice mail feature. I didn't think I wanted to use it until I found that when you receive a voice mail, it sends the voice mail file to the email you enter when setting your MagicJack up. It's great... Each message is sent as an individual email to your inbox with the audio file within the body of the email, plus the time and date and phone number the voice mail is from. I am loving it!!!

I'm going on my second year with MagicJack, so clearly I renewed the subscription for another year. I love it. I use it as a second line at home, and sometimes for work, or traveling abroad. If your traveling outside the US, and the hotel has broad band you can use it to call the US for free. One call from abroad will pay for several years of subscription. International minutes are so cheap, for [$] I talk for hours to Europe. It's not perfect, for [$] a year it's perfect to me. Vonage must hate them. LOL Oh, no special phone to buy. I have the base of a cordless phone conected to the MJ and the other handsets in other houses. A friend I reconded it love it too

For making calls, I have encountered only minor problems such as occasional interference. My local phone company is Frontier, who has not reached agreement with Magic Jack to send calls to MJ. This means that local Frontier callers cannot reach my MJ number. Frontier advises that they do not have an agreement anywhere in their service areas. MJ ads indicate that you can eliminate your landline and totally rely on MJ. That is misleading.

Well if you use usb thumbdrives then you're going to have issues with this device. If you plug in usb and unplug such devices, the [*]tells you to plug it into the computer when it already is. After about 3 or more unplugs and plugins it will finally start working...for now. Be warned, if you want a actual phone, buy a land line or go to vonage.

Phone did not work.
Spent 3 hours on chat-based support...no fix.
Spent another 2-3 hrs on chat-based support...no fix.
Company will not replace units purchased from Walgreens.

Fixed some problems myself (the USB config file was corrupted...most won't fix that unless they are a programmer.... Reverse-engineered config file and fixed basic problem.

Call quality still a problem.

Purchased second unit just out of curiousity and to give them a second chance.

Unit worked but call quality was poor. Tried the unit on a 20x20 fiber connection with QoS configured....still had problems.

Contacted support....again...no solution.

Returned the second unit to Walgreens (since I altered the first one I ate that cost--it's only fair)

Walgreens is great. They took the unit and gave me a refund! ;-) Thanks Walgreens.

The first device has since sacrificed itself to science since I found a lot of negative postings online about magicjack.

Performing a little testing I found that they store their usernames and passwords in cleartext in memory--something I consider a security risk.

WARNING: This has been a known issue since 2007 or 2008 and this company has done NOTHING TO FIX IT!

I have watched the commercials for this item for a few years now and I always thought it was too good to be true. I think they actually priced it a little too low because it really is hard to think you can get all the features it has for such a low price. I was spending 32.00 per month for a home phone line I used maybe 30 minutes a month. I only kept it because I sometimes fax and I needed a phone to use if my cell was dead etc. I bought the MagicJack and I am shocked at how well it works. I did read some negative reviews on the internet but keep in mind the millions that have been sold.

I came home, plugged it into the computer, plugged the phone in and within 2 minutes it had installed itself and was ready to make calls with my new number. Give it a try you will LOVE it! The only caveat is you must have your computer on to make calls. If your computer is off you can't place a call and incoming calls go directly to voicemail. I found that leaving my laptop on 24/day will only cost about $2.30 per month in electicity so I am still saving well over 29.00 a month, plus I have free long distance, caller ID, 3-way calling and voicemail. To get all these features with Verizon is over $50.00 a month not including internet. I really think this product is a winner. Give it a try while you still have your regular home phone service active. If you like the MagicJack then cancel your home service, if not take it back and keep yoru home service as is. I will say that just by calling Verizon and asking to cancel my home service they offered me 10.00 off my monthly bill but I decided to cancel anyway.

Beware - if your area is served by Frontier for landline service, you will not receive calls from Frontier customers. I have chatted many times with Magic Jack and all I get from them is "we will let you know". I contacted Frontier and was told that all Frontier service areas have the same situation. There must a signed agreement between the two and so far, there is none. The advertising that Magic Jack uses is false when they indicate "anyone in the world can call you".

I use as primary for all calls. Have had some connection problems that I haven't been able to diagnose - my computer system or the magicjack? Callers have reported a "delay" when calling in and a clicking while talking, which can be annoying. Have noticed incoming calls on the magicjack dialog box that didn't come through to me AND didn't go to voicemail - don't know what happened with those? There are some electronic mysteries but they haven't yet discouraged me from using the magicjack as my primary "line".

I'm sorry but we can't process a replacement if the product was not bought directly from us.Jeff: I believe it's over 30 days. That is really bad customer service. The item was working, now it's defective. That's your problem, not Walgreens. Also, I want to keep the same number because I gave it to all my friends and family, and believe me, that takes quite a bit of my time to do.Nikki: Please refer to our terms of service. We don't process a replacement if the product was not purchased directly from us."Just be prepared if you buy one and have it go bad. You may be out [$]!

Sent it back. I thought that I would give it another try last week May 2009, and this time I could not even register the product, their registration server was always down!!! So what good is it when you can't even register it. So it has gone back again and I will NOT Be giving it another try. There is no voice support what so ever, YOU CANNOT call them! You can spend 2 hours with their online support, truthfully, I think that I knew more about computers and software than they did! Don't waste your money.

PROS: It works ANYWHERE. Wonderful to use if you travel out of the country with a laptop where your cell phone doesn't work.

CONS: I can see how it would break easily;however, I would suggest using a USB extension cord to minimize the stress on the plastic housing/USB plug on it. I would also suggest keeping other open apps on your computer down to an absolute minimum to reduce transmission delay (sounds like "an echo").

Simply put, if you buy one, it's great. There's no "hidden fees" attached to it. You pay the one year (or 3 year) fee and that's it. Keep the Magicjack plugged in in an "out of the way" manner so you don't break it and it works great. I'm thinking of keeping a spare in my laptop case j.i.c I'm out and about and my cell dies or I don't get reception. I camp a lot during the summer and it's a great way to keep a "good number" where people can always get a hold of me.

oh, btw- I've NEVER had an issue with using it on my VISTA o.s. Works good on that AND on Mac o.s.'s as well.

I got this product so I could bring the cost of my home phone down to the basics, and have another line. This will probably save me about $40.00 per month.

Not such a good deal. BIG Time compatability problems with ANY VISTA operating systems. System frequently unavailable/buzy and getting worse by the day as product continues to be over sold without adding additional servers. Absolutely NO live Technical Assitance, just a bunch of FAQ's which are mostly worthless. Only time you can use for more than a 10 minute call is the middle of the night!!!

While this is a great value, I have owned 2 of these. Both broke - the USB plug broke off. The same problem with both of them. I ordered direct and the company will not exchange or refund. Their Customer Service leaves lots to be desired. The second one broke within five weeks. I wanted this to work so bad, because it really is a great deal, but I can't afford to continue buying a new one (and changing my phone number) every two months!

PROS: I have had Magic Jack as a second line for almost two years. I've had no problems with it. The calls are as clear as my previous nationally known provider. I just recently started using Magic Jack exclusively and again no big issues.

CONS: I have to agree with another comment, it would be nice if the caller ID showed on my phone. I can see the number but not the person's name. Also there is a button which should turn green once your location has been verified for 911 calls. My location has NOT been verified and I have submitted this to Magic Jack a couple of times.

I like the MagicJack! One complaint I have about the MagicJack is that the caller id is on the computer. Even if you get s phone that is caller id enabled, it still does not show up on the phone. So, if you have the MagicJack on a computer that is in a different room, then you can not see who is calling. Other than that, I like the MagicJack!

Simple to install and simple to use. My friends could tell no difference from my land-based phone. I make few long-distance calls but like to leave my local line available for incoming calls. This is a great product that will save you money.
