This was a surprise.
While there's certainly some marketing hype in Cremo's advertising copy, the product can deliver a great shave. As with any product, you *must* make sure to thoroughly wet your beard for 2-3 minutes before shaving - otherwise you're more likely to have a rough shave no matter what products you use. Do this, and Cremo affords a wonderful, close shave.
I've use a several well-known bowl soaps over the years with good success. Adding a pea-sized dab of Cremo into the bowl generates a slick lather that's an improvement over either one used alone. It's become my preferred method.
When I'm traveling, Cremo alone is sufficient, and more convenient.
The scent is described as citrus, but I find it distinctly orange-y, and not overpowering. It's pleasant and refreshing, and won't interfere with your aftershave's scent.

This stuff is great. Use only a very small amount to make face slick... Must do as instructions say... RAZOR does not clog hair it just rinses out. No more banging the razor on the sink...
One tube last a long time great bang for the buck...
Does not smell good but hey use aftershave for that...

I have to agree with the other reviews of Cremo Cream. Over the last 5 yrs it has never let me down, no matter the season or thickness of my beard. I have tried, and cannot find a better shave cream. Each tube lasts 6 months or more, and normally i give away the bottle while its low, to turn another friend onto it.

Cremo eliminates all skin irritation following shaves. Cremo even works with little growth... I recently shaved using Cremo with only ~16 hours between shaves and Cremo produced a complete and irritation-free shave. Also, Cremo leaves my skin smooth and well-moisturized (I don't even have to apply moisturizing lotion after a shave with Cremo!) Last, it is an excellent value - I will probably get 70-90 shaves per tube, so despite it's high price-per-tube, it's price-per-shave is quite low.
