73 Piece All Purpose Kit For On The Go!
Hi, I'm a Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) and I Live In Southwest China.
I'm white with black eye patches and black ears, legs, feet, chest and shoulders. My fur is very thick to protect me from the cold and damp climate where I live. I'm between 5 1/2 and 6 1/2 feet tall and can weigh up to 275 pounds! I live very high in the mountainous regions of Southwest China, where there is much bamboo for me to eat. There are 30 different species of bamboo for me to choose from. Because of my digestive system, I must eat a lot of bamboo to keep my energy high. In one day I can eat between 26 and 84 lbs. of bamboo shoots!
Our mating takes place from March to May, and females give birth from August to September. Moms usually give birth to 1-2 cubs; occasionally they may give birth to three or even four cubs, but it is rare for more than one cub to survive to adulthood. We are born blind and helpless, with a thin layer of fur. We stay with our mothers for 1 1/2 years.
Our reproductive success in captivity is low, and it probably also is in the wild. My reliance on bamboo makes me vulnerable to habitat loss, as well as once being hunted for my fur, meat and body parts. Because of this I have been classified as endangered by the IUCN. Since 1947, Defenders of Wildlife has been doing all they can to help endangered animals like me, the Giant Panda, and others.
Help Defenders Of Wildlife
The endangered species of the world need our help. Health Science Labs is working with Defenders Of Wildlife to safeguard wild species and their habitats. In 1947, Defenders of Furbearers, the organization that would later become Defenders of Wildlife, was founded. The fledgling organization boasted only one full-time employee and 1,500 members who made it their mission to protect coyotes and other furred animals from steel-jawed leghold traps and lethal poisons. In 2008, over sixty years later, Defenders of Wildlife employs over 150 dedicated professionals and is supported by more than 500,000 members nationwide. Our organization has evolved to take on the task of preserving our nation's native wildlife species and habitats.
Today, we are based in Washington, D.C., but our presence is felt around the world. We have numerous field offices that deal specifically with the wildlife species that inhabit the states or regions in which our staff is located. We also make a point to work with in-state partners and local conservation organizations around the county and visit important sites to get a first hand look at the wildlife and lands we protect. Our rapid development and expansion is a testament to Defenders of Wildlife's commitment to our mission and our efforts to give our members and the wildlife they long to preserve a voice in the field and in the halls of Congress.
