Trimming your pet's nails is an essential part of good grooming.  Keep nails trimmed for your pet's comfort - and your own.  Nails should be trimmed once every 2-3 weeks.  Examine the nail to find the quick (a pink area containing a network of blood vessels and nerves) in the upper portion of your pet's nails.  The quick can be seen through translucent nails and sometimes on the underside of dark nails.  If you can't identify the quick,  ask for help from your groomer or veterinarian.  Cutting it causes bleeding and discomfort.  Securely hold your pet's paw in a comfortable position.  Hold the trimmer in the palm of your hand with the cutting blade facing you.  Slip your pet's nail upward through the hole.  Clippers should be at a 45-degree angle from the bottom of the paw.  Position cutting blade 1/4" below the quick.  Use a swift, deliberate movement to trim the nail tip.
