• George Washington (1789-1797)
  Washington had a vision of a great and powerful nation.  He led his troops to a victory in the American Revolutionary War and presided over the writing of the Constitution.
• John Adams (1797-1801)
  Adams helped draft the Declaration of Independence and was a major negotiator of the eventual peace treaty with Great Britain.
• Thomas Jefferson (1801-1809)
  As the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson was one of the most influential Founding Fathers.
• James Madison (1809-1817)
  Madison was the principal author of the U.S. Constitution and is responsible for the first ten amendments or Bill of Rights.
• James Monroe (1817-1825)
  Monroe is best know for the Monroe Doctrine of 1823 which stated that the United States would not tolerate further European intervention in the Americas.
