Options in Eye Care Products

Your eyes can become red, swollen, watery and itchy due to allergies to the environment or an item to which you have been exposed. Allergies occur when your immune system mistakes something around you for a threat and takes steps to defend your body from it. Inflammation is one of the body's natural defenses, which is why your eyes become red, puffy and produce other symptoms due to allergies. Eye care for allergies consists primarily of drops that contain antihistamines, medications that reduce levels of immune system chemicals that produce inflammation during allergic reactions.

Dry eyes and redness of the eyes are two very common eye care problems. Your eyes require lubrication to remain comfortable, and some people do not produce enough tears or produce tears that do not contain the right blend of natural substances to properly lubricate the eyes. In many cases, eye drops that lubricate the eyes can be used to alleviate symptoms of dryness. Redness of the eyes can be caused by a variety of problems from having something foreign stuck in your eyes to dryness to infections. Short-term redness can be addressed with drops, which cause blood vessels in the eyes to shrink, making redness less prominent.

Contact lenses are corrective lenses that are used to correct vision. If you wear contacts, your eye doctor will explain how to care for them on a daily basis. Lens care requires the use of products, which may include saline for rinsing, cleansers for removing debris and soaking solutions for storing contacts overnight. Depending on the type of contact lenses you wear, your doctor may also recommend the use of periodic deep cleaners to remove proteins that can build up on your lenses and make it difficult for you to see.

Reading glasses are used to correct a vision problem called presbyopia, which makes it difficult to see close up. This problem often develops between the age of 40 and 45 and affects the majority of older adults. To choose the right reading glasses, you'll need a prescription from your doctor. The prescription tells you the amount of correction that you need to be able to see properly up close. Whether you wear eyeglasses for close vision or to help you see far away, you'll need to properly care for your glasses to keep them in the best possible condition. This can be done with lens cleansers and cleaning cloths made especially for eyeglasses. Eye care also includes wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from ultraviolet energy when you'll be outdoors.

If you are suffering from redness, itching, swelling or other eye-related symptoms, talk to your doctor before addressing your condition with over-the-counter products. It's easy to mistake symptoms of infection for allergies or harmless redness. Only your doctor can tell you precisely what the cause of your symptoms is. When using eye care products, always read the labels carefully and only use them as the manufacturer or your doctor recommends. BACK TO TOP »
