A square bottle actually uses MORE plastic than a round one. It does however take up less shelf space in the store and reduces the overall size of packaging a case of the bottles. Don't fall for this false statement, recall basic geometry. To hold 16 ounces requires a container with 16 ounces of capacity, you can't make a smaller bottle without reducing the capacity of the bottle! Besides that, round bottles evenly distribute the internal pressure which reduces the required wall thickness required.
