Finding the Ear, Nose and Throat Care Products for Your Needs

Earwax is produced by your body to help protect the inside of your ear (the ear canal) from harm. Your body actually sheds small amounts of earwax without your knowledge, and often, this is enough to keep the wax from becoming too thick inside of the canal. Some people produce extra earwax, and it is also possible to have very small ear canals that can become clogged by wax. If you suffer from either of these problems, excessive wax can make it difficult to hear. Earwax removal kits are meant to help loosen or dissolve excess wax and include both medicinal products and natural remedies like ear candles. Cotton swabs can be used to clean the outsides of the ears if wax or other debris has collected there. Most doctors advise against putting swabs inside of the ears because you could potentially injure your ear canal.

A sore throat can have a number of causes from nasal drainage running down the throat to breathing through your mouth to inhaling smoky or polluted air. You can also develop a sore throat from a cold or from a more serious condition like strep throat or mononucleosis (a viral infection sometimes called "the kissing disease" or "mono"). If you develop a sore throat, you should talk to your doctor to rule out any condition that requires prescription medication. In many cases, sore throats can be addressed simply through self-care and the use of products that numb the throat like cough drops, lozenges, syrups and sprays.

Nasal congestion occurs when the inside of the nose and the passages leading to the nose become inflamed. This can occur due to infections, the cold, the flu or allergies as well as for other reasons. When your nose is congested, you may find it difficult to breathe, to sleep and even to hear properly. Depending on the cause of your nasal congestion, there are a variety of personal care products available to provide relief from your symptoms. Decongestants may help to lessen inflammation. This may help air flow through your nose. Antihistamines can control allergy symptoms and have the potential to decrease mucus, which can exacerbate nasal congestion. Saline sprays thin mucus and can be used on their own or with other nasal congestion solutions. You can also purchase neti pots, which flush the nasal cavities with saline.

Don't forget to talk to your doctor about your ear, nose and throat concerns. Depending on your health care needs, there may be certain products that are a better choice for your personal care routine. Your doctor can also determine what is causing your symptoms. Whatever ear, nose or throat care product you select, be sure to only use it as directed for best results. BACK TO TOP
