Nasal Sprays at Walgreens

Having a stuffy nose can be a source of discomfort and irritation. Nasal congestion can be caused by illnesses such as the common cold or by seasonal allergies. There are many over-the-counter treatment options to help ease feelings of congestion and make breathing more comfortable, and these medicines differ depending on the symptoms and causes associated with a person’s congestion. Walgreens offers a variety of nasal sprays that can help manage nasal congestion, all of which can be purchased in stores or online to fit your needs.

What is nasal congestion?

Nasal congestion occurs when the tissue in the nose swells due to inflamed blood vessels, which can also lead to increased mucus production. It can make breathing through the nose difficult or uncomfortable and can often be accompanied by sneezing, coughing, or headaches.

Congestion can be triggered by many factors. Some of the most common causes include acute rhinitis, allergic rhinitis, and nonallergic rhinitis.

  • Acute rhinitis is caused by a virus such as the common cold or the flu.
  • Allergic rhinitis is the body’s reaction to irritants and can vary depending on the person. It can be caused by dust, pet dander, mold, and pollen from plants and trees.
  • Nonallergic rhinitis occurs when fluid builds up in the tissue of the nose and causes inflammation. It can be caused by environmental factors like stress, changes in weather, or exposure to things like smoke or paint fumes. It can also be caused by some medications or hormonal changes.

Can you use nasal sprays every day?

Some nasal sprays can be used every day in some cases. Using nasal spray can be an effective method of reducing nasal congestion and improving symptoms, either caused by allergies or illness. However, different types of nasal sprays should be used depending on the cause of the congestion. Some nasal sprays are especially made to treat allergy symptoms. These are often known as steroid nasal sprays and antihistamine nasal sprays, and they are safe for most people to use long term. They can also be helpful in treating nonallergic rhinitis.

Decongestant nasal spray is best for reducing congestion caused by illnesses such as a cold or flu, but these nasal sprays should not be used for more than a few days at a time. Using decongestant nasal spray for a longer period can cause symptoms to come back or get worse.

Saline nasal sprays are also available to treat a stuffy nose and work by moisturizing the inside of your nose and washing out mucus.

Remember to read labels carefully when choosing a nasal spray, and ask a pharmacist for help if you need it.

How to use nasal sprays

To ensure you use nasal spray correctly and effectively, follow these tips:

References

  • Gently blow your nose before using nasal spray to clear your nose in preparation for the medicine.
  • Read the instructions on the label of the spray to ensure proper use.
  • Place the bottle under one nostril and point the spray towards the back of your nose, so it can reach the sinuses.
  • Squeeze or pump the bottle carefully and inhale gently with your mouth closed. It’s best to inhale gently because the spray should only reach the nose and sinuses. You shouldn’t taste the spray in the back of your throat.

When using nasal spray for allergies or illness, try not to tilt your head back when using the spray. Avoid taking large inhales and sniffs. Try not to blow your nose after using nasal spray. It’s also important not to share nasal spray to avoid spreading sickness and bacteria.

If nasal spray does not improve your symptoms, other over-the-counter or prescription treatments may help. Speak with your healthcare provider for additional help, and ask for assistance from a pharmacist in stores if you are having trouble choosing the right nasal spray for you.
