Self-tanners give skin a natural-looking tan without the sun. Why is this important? Exposure to sunlight causes skin damage that leads to premature aging and increases the risk of skin cancer. Walgreens Self Tanner Products can help you achieve that sun-kissed glow without the unwanted side effects of long-term sun exposure. READ MORE ABOUT SELF TANNERS ›
The active ingredient in self-tanners is called dihydroxyacetone or DHA. It reacts with dead skin cells on the surface of your skin and gradually turns them darker. This gives your skin the appearance of a tan. As the dead skin cells are shed, the tan gradually disappears. To maintain it, you will just need to reapply the self-tanner.
Self-tanners are beneficial in a number of different ways. They can be a timesaver because you don't have to spend time lying in the sun, and most importantly, you can get a tanned appearance without the sun damage.
Self-tanners come in a variety of forms - sprays, gels, lotions, mists and self-tanning towelettes. Some self-tanners are specially formulated for people with particular skin tones. There are many different products for the body. If you have fair skin, a self-tanner for light to medium skin gives the most natural appearance. Dark skin tones can enjoy the extra tanning power of self-tanners made for medium to dark skin. Also available are self-tanners for the face. With facial self-tanners you can get a subtle hint of color for a healthy glow or deeper color that looks like you've been basking in the sun.
When you use a self-tanner, the color develops gradually. Some self-tanners are formulated with a bronzer that darkens your skin immediately to give you color until the self-tan develops. You can also buy bronzers that give you immediate color that can be removed with water. The advantage is you can wash it off at the end of the day.
Airbrush tanning supplies are also available that use an airbrush wand to spray on a tan. The advantage is it gives you the most even tan possible and the tan lasts up to a week. You can apply a light layer using the airbrush wand and gradually build up a deeper tan.
You should avoid applying self-tanning products to mucous membranes, around your nose, lips and eyes. If you use an airbrush tanning product, cover your nose, mouth and eyes to avoid inhaling the product. Be aware that many self-tanners don't contain a sunscreen. You'll still need to wear a sunscreen and sun protection when you go outside to avoid damaging your skin. Look for a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
Sunless Self-tanners make it possible to get a realistic-looking tan or a golden glow without exposing your skin to UV radiation; but it's important to note that you should not use one as a replacement for sunscreen. There are numerous types of sun care products available to protect your skin from trusted brands such as Jergens, L'Oreal, and Neutrogena. BACK TO TOP ›
