What are Glucosamine and Chondroitin used for?
Glucosamine and Chondroitin are commonly used by people with osteoarthritis for the treatment of pain and to increase flexibility. They rebuild damaged cartilage and exhibit mild anti-inflammatory effects. Glucosamine is naturally found in cartilage and declines with age; glucosamine tablets/capsules are made of chitin. Chondroitin is made from shark and beef cartilage, bovine trachea, or can be made synthetically.
Possible Glucosamine and Chondroitin side effects
People who are allergic to shellfish or iodine should consider the risks versus benefits. Side effects associated with glucosamine are upset stomach, sun sensitivity, headache, and nail hardening. Clinical evidence shows little to no effect on symptomatic relief compared to placebo. A physician may reduce the dose of an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) medication if the patient experiences symptomatic relief from glucosamine and chondroitin.
