- What are AARP and Walgreens announcing?
AARP and Walgreens are launching a two-year national mobile health screening tour called The
AARP/Walgreens Wellness Tour. The goal of the tour is to deliver more than 2.5 million free
health screenings for early detection and prevention of diseases, as well as health education,
with a special emphasis on underserved areas. The total value of the screenings to be
administered over the course of the tour is estimated at over $60 million.
The nationwide tour will visit more than 3,000 communities in 300 cities in 45 states and
Puerto Rico via nine customized, traveling education and health-screening buses. One of the
nine buses is solely dedicated to Puerto Rico and is called the AARP/Walgreens La Gira Del Buen
Vecino.
The tour officially kicks off on April 14, 2009 in New York City's Rockefeller Plaza. (The tour
had a soft launch in February 2009 in the Puerto Rico market).

- Why are AARP and Walgreens involved in this?
Both AARP and Walgreens are focused on improving the health and quality of life in communities
across the nation. Many diseases can be detected long before symptoms are even noticed, which
is why early detection is the key to staying healthy. With AARP's help, Walgreens will be able
to provide these free health screenings to people who are most in need of affordable health
care.
-

- What screenings will the tour offer?
The Wellness Tour will offer six free health screenings, for a total value of over $140
including:
- Total Cholesterol Levels - Screenings raise awareness of high blood cholesterol as a
risk factor for coronary heart disease, the first step toward modifying lifestyle to reduce
risk.
- Blood Pressure - High blood pressure is one of the most common chronic conditions in
adults; however, people with high blood pressure usually don't have symptoms, so they often
don't know that they have it until it is measured.
- Bone Density - Bone density testing is a valuable tool in the diagnosis of
osteoporosis and is a fairly accurate predictor of a person's risk of fractures.
- Glucose Levels - Blood glucose testing is used to screen healthy individuals for
diabetes and pre-diabetes because diabetes is a common disease that begins with few
symptoms.
- Waist Circumference, Body Composition/Body Mass Index - The nation's scales are
going up and therefore raising public awareness about the problem of obesity and the risk of
excess weight is critical.

- How many people are able to receive the health screenings at each Wellness Tour
stop?
Although the hours of each event may vary and no appointment is necessary, each bus has the
capacity to screen approximately 20 people per hour. It is recommended that participants arrive
at least one hour prior to the end of each event to best ensure getting screened before the
event ends. Screenings take between 20-25 minutes, depending on the wait.
Participants who are unable to receive their free screenings can talk to the tour staff on the
bus to receive information about additional tour stops that may be conveniently accessed.
-

their health. Additionally, visitors will receive a free one-year AARP membership offer (see #

- Will arrangements be made for people with disabilities or those requiring special
assistance?

- I understand that as a part of the tour, free AARP memberships will be available to
participants that have received a health screening. I am under 50 years of age. Can I still
redeem the one-year free membership?
Yes. Free, one-year AARP memberships will be given to all adults who receive screenings as a
gift from Walgreens. Participants under the age of 50 can either give the free membership to an
eligible adult or join as an Associate member. Existing members will receive a one-year
extension on their current membership status. Associate membership is designed for those under
50 who support the association's goals and objectives, and offers many, but not all member
benefits. Once an Associate member celebrates a 50th birthday, they automatically become a full
member and can take advantage of all AARP benefits and services. Associate members do not
receive an official membership card, but a confirmation letter of membership should be received
within 8 to 12 weeks. In all cases, the free membership must be activated by filling out
and mailing the postage-paid application on the brochure. Please note that the tour staff
cannot collect membership applications, they must be mailed by the individual.

the postage-paid application on the brochure, which includes a space for existing members to
supply their AARP membership number.

- How are the Wellness Tour stops determined?
The AARP/Walgreens Wellness Tour's aim is to bring free services and health awareness directly
to those who may otherwise not have the resources for and access to affordable health care.
AARP and Walgreens will collaborate to develop a schedule that puts a special emphasis on
underserved communities. By reaching out to people in communities that are traditionally
underserved, the Tour is targeting areas that need the most attention and care. Also, the
screenings provided represent some of the most critical health data needed for the early
detection and prevention of diseases.
