Reducing Our Carbon Footprint
Making Walgreens Stores More Efficient and Eco-friendly
In an effort to make each store more eco-friendly, Walgreens uses LED lighting in all new coolers, freezers and exterior building signage. LED lighting lasts longer, reduces maintenance costs and reduces energy use by more than 50 percent compared with fluorescent lighting. Walgreens also uses energy management systems in more than 1,100 stores--and growing--to reduce energy usage and maintenance costs and extend equipment life.
More than two years ago, Walgreens started to offer green shopping bags to customers. The bags are made either of non-woven polypropylene or 80 percent recycled water bottles.
Next time you're in our store, look up at the lights. By simply decreasing the already energy-efficient 28 watt light bulbs to 25 watts, Walgreens will save enough energy to power 6,020 households a year!
Walgreens Recycles
In 2010, Walgreens recycled nearly 70 million pounds of cardboard--enough to fill a football field 40 feet high! The company also recycled enough plastic shrink wrap to occupy an area comparable to the size of a 1.25 foot high football field. Thankfully, that shrink wrap was saved from ending up in a landfill.
