What is HIPAA

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act ("HIPAA") is a federal law that requires the safeguarding of Protected Health Information (“PHI”) of a patient. Healthcare Providers and Health Plans are subject to HIPAA.

The law requires Healthcare Providers to make patients aware of their Notice of Privacy Practices, which outlines how patient data will be used and disclosed. Patient data is generally used or disclosed without further patient agreement as follows:

To provide you with your records; to provide treatment, to facilitate payment, and other purposes to support the operation of the Healthcare Provider.
