Chlamydia is caused by bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis. It can infect the genital area and rectal tract in both women and men. The risk of getting chlamydia is greater if you have a new sexual partner, more than one sexual partner, or if you have had chlamydia before and have sexual contact with a partner who was not treated.

Antibiotics can cure chlamydia infection. You can still pass chlamydia to others while being treated, so avoid sexual activity for at least 7 days after taking the medication and until all symptoms are gone.

Even after successful treatment, it is possible to get chlamydia again. Repeat infections are common, so it is important to get tested again about three months after treatment, even if your partner was treated.

To obtain doxycycline for chlamydia, you will need a prescription from a licensed healthcare provider. This can be done through an in-person visit or a virtual consultation, such as an STI treatment visit through Walgreens Virtual Healthcare.

Contraindications:

• Do not use if you had an allergic reaction to doxycycline or another tetracycline antibiotic.

Warnings and Precautions:

• Permanent tooth discoloration in developing teeth. The use of doxycycline during tooth development (last half of pregnancy, infancy and childhood to the age of 8 years) may cause permanent discoloration of the teeth (yellow-gray-brown)
• Kidney damage. This medicine may be associated with increases in blood urea nitrogen (BUN), a measure used to assess kidney function.
• Severe diarrhea: Doxycycline can sometimes cause a serious type of diarrhea linked to a bacterial infection (called C. difficile).
• Increased pressure inside the head (intracranial hypertension): Symptoms may include headache, blurred or double vision, and vision loss.
• Sun sensitivity (photosensitivity). Doxycycline can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight, leading to sunburn. Limit sun exposure.
• Increased risk for other bacterial or fungal infections including yeast infections.

Side Effects:

• Gastrointestinal: Loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, swollen tongue, trouble swallowing, inflammation of the intestines, irritation or sores in the genital or anal area, and inflammation of the pancreas. Liver toxicity has also been reported. In rare cases, inflammation or sores of the esophagus have occurred, mostly in people who took the medication right before going to bed.
• Skin: Rash, redness, and increased sensitivity to sunlight. Serious skin reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, erythema multiforme, exfoliative dermatitis, and fixed drug eruption have also been reported.
• Kidney: An increase in a blood test called BUN, which helps check kidney function, has been reported. This is more likely to happen with higher doses of the medication.
• Hypersensitivity reactions: stop using doxycycline and get medical help right away if you have any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction including swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat, severe rash or itching, very rapid heartbeat, problems breathing or swallowing, fainting or feeling dizzy.
• Blood: Doxycycline can cause blood disorders such as hemolytic anemia, low platelet levels (thrombocytopenia), low neutrophil levels (neutropenia), and low eosinophil levels (eosinopenia).
• Psychiatric: Depression, anxiety, thoughts of suicide, trouble sleeping, abnormal dreams, hallucinations
• Other: Intracranial hypertension (increased pressure inside the head) that may cause headaches, blurry or double vision, and vision loss.

These are not all the possible side effects. Talk to your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that bother you, worsen, or do not go away.

Drug Interactions:

• Anticoagulant therapy (blood-thinners)
• Penicillin
• Antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium, and iron-containing preparations
• Products that contain bismuth subsalicylate
• Medicine to treat seizures, such as carbamazepine or phenytoin.
• Birth control pills
