Eligibility, Coverage and Membership Information
Who's included/excluded in a family membership?
For just $35 a year, a family membership includes a single account that covers everyone in your
immediate family, including a spouse, dependents under the age of 23 and pets. You will receive
two Walgreens Cards, linked to the account, which can be used to shop, earn and redeem bonuses
on Walgreens and Nice! brand products and photofinishing services.* Additional adult family
members living in the same household, like a parent or grandparent, will need to enroll
separately.
Can college students enroll separately from their parents?
Yes. Individuals 18 years or older can enroll in the program.
Why are Medicare, Medicaid recipients excluded?
Federal and state statutes prohibit persons enrolled in a publicly funded health care program
from participating in this program.
Is the Prescription Savings Club a substitute for prescription insurance?
This program is not an insurance plan. However, if you do not have insurance, have
prescriptions that may be excluded by your insurance plan or not covered because you have
exceeded your insurance plan's maximum, or your co-pays are too high, this program can save you
and your family significant money on your prescription needs.
If I already have insurance but want my uncovered drugs to be filled under the
Prescription Savings Club, would the Club be considered secondary insurance?
The Prescription Savings Club cannot be used in conjunction with other prescription drug
insurance or discount cards on any one purchase. If the Prescription Savings Club has a lower
price on your medication than your insurance or co-pay, you can use the Club in place of your
insurance. Of course, you can always use the Club to purchase prescriptions that are not
covered by your insurance. Having other prescription drug coverage does not disqualify you from
enrolling in the Prescription Savings Club unless it is a publicly funded health care
program.
What if I have other prescription drug discount cards?
Ask your Walgreens pharmacist which program saves you the most on your current
prescriptions.
Are the prescription discounts also available if I order my prescription on
walgreens.com?
Yes, prescriptions for Prescription Savings Club members can be ordered on walgreens.com. You
can even choose to have the prescription mailed to your home. Standard shipping is Free.
Is my membership automatically cancelled if I enroll in a Medicare program?
No. However, please inform your Walgreens pharmacist immediately after you have enrolled in a
publicly funded insurance program like Medicare. When you renew your membership annually, you
will be asked to attest that you are not receiving benefits from a publicly funded health care
program.
Does the Prescription Savings Club cover pet medications?
Yes. The club includes discounted pricing on common human medications often prescribed to pets,
such as Amoxicillin (antibiotic), Humulin© (insulin), Hydrocortisone (skin
conditions), Omeprazole (digestive), etc. In order to qualify for the discount, you must have a
valid prescription for your pet and the medication must be one that has a human equivalent.
Your veterinarian will tell you if your pet's prescription can be filled at a retail
pharmacy.
How are pets enrolled: as individuals or as a family member?
Pets can be enrolled as individuals or as part of a family membership. As part of a family
membership, simply add the pet's name in your list of dependents. You can add a pet at any time
by stopping in or calling any Walgreens pharmacy.

Information on Generics
What are generic drugs?
Generic drugs are identical in dose, strength, route of administration, safety, efficacy, and
intended use as a brand name drug and can be manufactured by any pharmaceutical company after
the original patent on the brand name drug has expired.
Are generic drugs as safe and strong as brand name drugs?
Yes. The FDA requires that all drugs be safe and effective. Since generics use the same active
ingredients and are shown to work the same way in the body, they have the same risks and
benefits as their brand name counterparts. What can be different is the way a generic drug is
formulated with respect to inactive ingredients that bind or preserve the drug, as well as
determine size, shape or color.
Does every brand name drug have a generic?
No. Brand name drugs are generally given patent protection for 20 years from the date of
submission of the patent. This provides protection for the innovator who paid the initial costs
to develop the new drug. However, when the patent expires other drug companies can introduce
competitive generic versions. Generic drugs can be legally produced for drugs where: 1)the
patent has expired, 2)the generic company certifies the brand company's patents are either
invalid, unenforceable or will not be infringed, 3)for drugs which have never held patents or
4) in countries where a patent(s) is/are not in force.
Why are generic drugs less expensive?
Generics cost less because they do not share the expense of the initial investment the original
manufacturer incurred to research and develop the drug, nor the sales and marketing costs
associated with brand names. As patents near expiration, manufacturers can apply to the FDA to
sell generic versions. Because those manufacturers don't have the same development costs, they
can sell their product at substantial discounts. On average, a generic drug costs 30 percent to
80 percent less than its brand counterpart. Today, almost half of all prescriptions are filled
with generic drugs.
How can I switch my medication to one that is less expensive on the Prescription Savings
Club?
Your Walgreens pharmacist is available to speak to your doctor about generics and lower cost
alternatives at any time. Also, the next time you visit the doctor, bring the list of
value-priced generics with you. Ask your doctor to write a prescription for a generic
medication, or indicate "may substitute" on your prescription(s). "May substitute" means that
the pharmacist can substitute the generic equivalent for your prescription.
*Good only for products distributed exclusively by Walgreen Co. and bearing the Walgreens logo, Nice!, or "W", with the exception of dairy. Photofinishing exclusions apply. See Terms and Conditions for complete details.
**Bonus dollars cannot be applied to purchases of alcohol, gift cards, Prescription Savings Club membership fees, prescriptions, postage stamps, pre-paid cards or tobacco products.
