From Counting Sheep to Falling Alseep: Tips that Work
We've all tossed and turned in bed before, just wishing we could fall asleep. The good news is that some simple changes in routine and behavior can help.
1. Find your rhythm. It may seem silly, but going to sleep and waking at the same time each day really works. Your body's sleep cycle kicks off your body's production of melatonin (the hormone that tells our body it is OK to sleep). If you go to sleep every night around 10 p.m., your sleep cycle stays one step ahead and produces melatonin at that time so you're ready for rest.
2. Develop "sleep healthy" patterns. Sticking to a routine, a healthy one, makes sleep easier for you. Fewer variables help make it easier for you to wind down. Taking a warm bath, reading or listening to soft music before bed every night puts your mind at ease.
3. Check the thermostat. You'll get your best rest if your sleep space is kept cool. Your body temperature drops during sleep, so keeping your internal temperature in sync with your external temperature can help you sleep soundly.
4. Remove distractions. TVs and cell phones are huge distractions in a sleep environment. Clutter of any kind is better kept out of the bedroom
