Question

How should I take Fortical?

Answer

Allow Fortical® (calcitonin) to come to room temperature before taking the first dose. Prime the pump by holding the bottle upright and pumping the unit until you see a full spray. Priming is only necessary the first time you use the bottle. Gently blow your nose before inserting the pump into your nostril. Hold your head upright, place the pump in the nostril and pump one time. Do not inhale. After the first use, the bottle may be stored at room temperature for 30 days.

What is the proper dose of Fortical?

Fortical® (calcitonin) is used once a day. You should alternate nostrils every day. It may be helpful to use it at the same time every day. This will help you remember to take Fortical. You should only use the amount prescribed. Follow the directions on the package label carefully. Be sure to discuss any questions with your doctor.

How do I properly store and handle Fortical?

Follow the proper storage and handling Fortical® (calcitonin) guidelines:
Keep tightly closed in the original container
Keep out of reach of children and pets
Store unopened nasal spray in the refrigerator
Store opened bottles at room temperature, in an upright position
Replace the plastic cover (this keeps the nozzle clean)
Throw away opened spray stored at room temperature after 30 days
Don't freeze nasal spray
Don't let anyone else use your nasal spray.

What happens if I miss a dose of Fortical?

If you forget to take a dose of Fortical® (calcitonin), take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and get back on schedule with the following dose. Never take two doses at the same time.

How soon after taking Fortical will my symptoms improve?

Fortical® (calcitonin) treats osteoporosis, a condition that may not have symptoms. Regular bone density tests can tell you if the drug is working. If you do experience pain from osteoporosis, Fortical may relieve it. Avoid low blood calcium levels by having frequent testing and by using calcium supplements when it drops.
