Safe Medication Disposal Program
Disposal Options
In September 2010, Walgreens launched the first nationwide Safe Medication Disposal Program, providing customers a convenient and environmentally responsible way to safely discard expired or unused medications.
A specially designed envelope created for the program can be securely sealed and dropped into any U.S. Postal Service mailbox and sent to a medication incinerator facility. The envelopes are never opened, and licensed law enforcement personnel are on-site during processing to ensure safety and compliance.
Since the program began, Walgreens customers have helped keep more than 25,000 pounds of unused or expired medications out of landfills.
Did You Know?
When the Safe Medication Disposal Program envelopes are incinerated, the ashes are ground up and formed into pellets which are used as an additive to concrete.
