Collagen Tablets

Collagen is a type of protein fiber called connective tissue. It provides support and structure to your organs and skin. It also helps to make your skin elastic. Most of your connective tissue is made up of collagen fibers. Connective tissues include cartilage and tendons in your bones and joints. Collagen tablets are most often made from the cartilage of chicken or sharks. People most often take collagen dietary aids or supplements to increase the amount of the protein in their bodies. Some natural practitioners claim that taking collagen can strengthen the skin and help to reduce wrinkles. More studies are needed to see if collagen can really give you these benefits. A small number of studies have found a benefit. There was a study done on athletes at Penn State University. It used two groups of college athletes who had joint pain. The study compared athletes that took collagen and those athletes that did not. Those that took a collagen supplement every day for 24 weeks had less joint pain compared to those that did not take collagen.

Safety Information Regarding Collagen Tablets

Collagen tablets may not be safe for everyone. Different kinds of collagen can affect people differently. Collagen from chicken can cause an allergy reaction in people with allergies to chicken or eggs. Collagen from shark cartilage is used by some people to increase their calcium. Calcium is a natural mineral in your body. Too much calcium could be unsafe for some people. These include people with kidney conditions. Shark cartilage may also lower blood sugar readings in people with diabetes. There are also some medications that interact with shark cartilage. These include water pills called thiazide diuretics, thyroid medications, antibiotics, diabetes medications and calcium supplements. There are minor side effects with collagen from chicken or shark. Before taking any type of collagen supplement, be sure to talk to your doctor or pharmacist. They can help you figure out what type of collagen you should take. They can review your medical condition and any other medications you are taking to be sure you are safe.
