Folding wheelchairs

Is a folding wheelchair best for your needs? People often choose a folding wheelchair because they want to maintain their active lifestyle and they like the convenience of being able to transport their wheelchair in their car between activities. To aid your mobility during vacations, a folding wheelchair can be stored on airplanes and on busses, trains, and cruise ships, too. Caretakers also appreciate a folding wheelchair's portability, particularly if a day includes multiple appointments and errands. Today's folding wheelchairs come with a variety of features.

Types of folding wheelchairs

Typically, there are three different types of folding wheelchairs: self-propelled, electric, and caretaker-propelled. Self-propelled models are appropriate for users who have the upper body strength and core control to power the wheelchair. Some may be designed for competing in sporting events. They have large rear wheels, and for ease of folding and storage, the rear wheels may be removable. An electric folding wheelchair is a good choice for those who want to maintain their independence, but can't operate a manual model due to health concerns or physical limitations. Electric wheelchairs can be used for in-home mobility, as well as for traveling distances while away from home. If you rely on an attendant to help you with your daily activities, opt for a caretaker-propelled folding wheelchair. This type of wheelchair may also include a reclining feature to help with breathing, digestion, and alleviating pressure. No matter which type of folding wheelchair you choose, look for a model that turns smoothly and maneuvers safely across uneven terrain. It should be sturdy to operate, but also lightweight enough to fold and transport. The seat should be cushioned and level. If you need the wheelchair for use in a small bathroom, or to navigate through narrow doorways, make note of the wheelchair width before purchasing. For added comfort, a padded headrest and backrest may be preferred. For arm support, a folding wheelchair may include adjustable armrests. These armrests may also be detachable. For easy entry, you may prefer a swing-away footrest. Look for safety features such as anti-tipping devices, automatic brakes, a seat belt, and wheel locks.
