Oil Free Sunscreen

Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in the United States. You can greatly decrease your risk of developing the disease simply by using sunscreen before you head outdoors. Ensuring that your skin is well-protected from the sun doesn't mean having to sacrifice the appearance of your skin. Walgreens can help you find the ideal sunscreen to protect you while meeting your unique skin care needs with an assortment of oil free sunscreen formulas.

Why Oil Free?

Along with their sun protective chemicals or minerals, sunscreens contain ingredients to make them easier to apply and to give them a pleasing consistency. Often, manufacturers add natural oils to sunscreens to give them a creamier texture and to provide hydration for the skin. While oils in sunscreens can be beneficial for some people, if you have oily or acne-prone skin, the oils in sunscreen could worsen skin congestion or leave your skin feeling greasy. An oil free sunscreen can help you get the sun protection that you need without adding extra oil to your skin tissue.

Selecting the Right SPF

One of the most important aspects of choosing an oil free sunscreen is finding the right SPF level for your needs. Beauty brands must have approval from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in order to label their products with SPF. The Sun Protection Factor or SPF is the measure of how much ultraviolet B (UVB) light a product absorbs or reflects. An SPF 15 product can filter out about 93 percent of sunburn-causing UVB rays. An SPF 30 product can filter about 97 percent of UVB, while an SPF 50 product can filter about 98 percent. To get the added benefit of protection from ultraviolet A (UVA), which contributes to signs of aging and skin cancer, you can select a product with broad-spectrum SPF protection. Your doctor can recommend the right SPF level for your skin.

Comparing Sunscreen Formulas

After you have decided which SPF level is the best choice for your oil free sunscreen, you can compare the forms of sunscreen available. Traditional lotions are easy to apply from head to toe, but they can be messy. Sunscreen sticks are neater to use but may take longer to apply all over the body. You'll also want to decide whether or not you need a waterproof sunscreen that will resist washing off if you swim or sweat profusely. No matter which type you choose, it's necessary to reapply sunscreen at least every two hours to continue to protect your skin from the sun.
