Understanding Tadalafil
What is tadalafil?
Tadalafil, generic for Cialis, is an oral medication prescribed to treat male sexual dysfunction, which may also be referred to as erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence. It’s a medication in tablet form that is taken either as needed 30 minutes before sexual activity no more than once every 24 hours, or at lower strengths once daily without regard to timing of sexual activity. Tadalafil tablets are also used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men, as well as high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs (pulmonary arterial hypertension, PAH) in men and women. An oral suspension is available for PAH. These medications should not be used at the same time or as a replacement for each other.
How does tadalafil work?
Tadalafil is a phosphodiesterase-5 enzyme (PDE-5) inhibitor. When combined with sexual stimulation, tadalafil increases blood flow to the penis, helping men get and keep an erection. Tadalafil for erectile dysfunction is not effective without sexual stimulation.
How to take tadalafil for best results
When used on an as-needed basis, take tadalafil at least 30 minutes prior to sexual activity. It should not be taken more than once every 24 hours. When used daily, take only once per day and at the same time each day, regardless of when sexual activity occurs. Do not split or chew the tablet. Tadalafil can be taken with or without food.
How long does tadalafil take to work?
Tadalafil is only effective for erectile dysfunction when combined with sexual stimulation. It starts working in approximately 30 to 60 minutes.
How long does tadalafil last?
Tadalafil is long lasting and can be effective for up to 36 hours. Patients should seek emergency treatment for an erection that lasts longer than four hours.
What are the side effects of tadalafil?
As with all medications, tadalafil can cause side effects, and some may be serious. Some common side effects of tadalafil for erectile dysfunction include headache, dyspepsia, muscle and back pain, and nasal congestion. These side effects are usually temporary. Muscle and back pain typically go away on their own in 48 hours. Contact your healthcare provider if these side effects don’t go away or if they’re bothersome.
Seek immediate medical help if you notice any severe side effects such as sudden hearing loss or impairment, an erection that lasts longer than four hours, a sudden drop in blood pressure, or a loss of vision in one or both eyes. Some serious but rare eye problems have occurred. These problems may lead to eyesight changes and sometimes eyesight loss. Loss of eyesight may be temporary or permanent. On rare occasions, tadalafil can cause abnormal heartbeat, stroke or heart attack. These complications are more likely to occur in individuals who had heart problems prior to taking tadalafil. Speak with your Walgreens healthcare provider regarding your full medical history to make sure tadalafil is safe for you to take.

- Tadalafil vs. sildenafil: What’s the difference?

Both medications can be taken as needed at least 30 minutes prior to sexual activity once every 24 hours. Tadalafil may have longer lasting effects in your body than sildenafil. Because of this, tadalafil in some strengths can be taken daily on a scheduled basis no matter when sexual activity occurs. Tadalafil and sildenafil should never be taken together. Talk to your healthcare provider about which medication is right for you.

Tadalafil can be used on an as-needed basis, but some strengths can be taken on a daily schedule regardless of when sexual activity occurs. However, vardenafil is only used as needed. When used on an as-needed basis, tadalafil can be taken 30 minutes before sexual activity, while vardenafil can be taken one hour before. Tadalafil and vardenafil are available in oral tablet form when used for erectile dysfunction. Tadalafil and vardenafil should never be taken together.
