8 Easy, Delicious Ways to Cook for Diabetes
Provide Protein

Experts recommend that people with diabetes (who don’t have kidney disease) get 20 to 30 percent of their calories from protein, which can help create a feeling of fullness and possibly slow the digestion of carbs. The best protein sources for people with diabetes are lean ones. Be sure to include some protein at each meal and snack.
Here are some examples of smart protein choices:
- Fatty fish like salmon, tuna and sardines
- Lean chicken and turkey
- Tofu
- Beans like chickpeas, black beans and kidney beans (remember these also contain carbohydrate)
- Low-fat or nonfat dairy products like milk and yogurt (both carbohydrate choices) and cottage cheese
- Nuts like almonds and walnuts, and peanuts (which are legumes)
