Vitamin E For Skin
Vitamin E for Skin
Vitamin E is a natural antioxidant vitamin found in certain foods. Antioxidants help to protect all of the cells in your body against damage from free radicals produced by internal stressors and external environmental factors. Many beauty brands use vitamin E in their formulations to protect skin cells from damage and promote good health. Every day your skin is exposed to ultraviolet light from the sun. This is one common cause of harmful free radicals that can damage skin cells. These free radicals contribute to signs of skin aging like wrinkles and loss of skin firmness. Some medical research shows vitamin E protects skin against damage from sunlight. As such, it may help to reduce the risk of wrinkles and improve the appearance of aging skin as well as promote and boost the natural healing process. More research is needed to confirm these benefits and vitamin E should never be considered a substitute for sunscreen. At one time vitamin E oil was recommended for treating scars. However, most research shows vitamin E is not effective for preventing or improving the appearance of scars. Some research suggests oral vitamin E may help with the symptoms of other skin conditions such as eczema. It's not clear whether applying vitamin E oil directly to the skin helps with eczema or other types of skin disease.
Forms of Topical Vitamin E
Vitamin E is available alone in the form of diet supplements and skin care products. It can also be found in combination with other antioxidants and vitamins. Vitamin E may have greater antioxidant benefits when combined with other antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin C. Vitamin C is commonly used in skin care products. Research shows it may improve the appearance of skin damaged by sun exposure. Vitamin E is often added to moisturizers and anti-aging skin treatments for its conditioning, nourishing and protective qualities. Vitamin E is generally considered to be healthy and safe but some people experience skin irritation or a skin rash when they apply it to their skin. If you experience a skin reaction, stop using it and consult your dermatologist.
