Yohimbe Extract

Yohimbe extract is an herb that comes from the bark of an evergreen tree that grows only in the Western portion of Africa. People who in live in the region have long used yohimbe to help men overcome erectile dysfunction, the term for difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection. Herbalists in the developed world sometimes recommend yohimbe extract for dealing with sexual problems in men. Only a few studies have been conducted to evaluate whether or not yohimbe is beneficial for those who suffer from erection issues. More research into the actions of the herb is necessary. However, the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database states that the herb is "possibly effective" for erectile dysfunction as well as for addressing sexual side effects of certain medications for depression. Yohimbe should not be confused with Yohimbine which is a prescription medication.

Using Yohimbe Safely

To help you find the yohimbe extract product that is perfect for your needs, Walgreens stocks several different supplements. Options include traditional capsules and liquid extracts that are dispensed with droppers and can be placed on the tongue or mixed with liquid. Before you begin taking any yohimbe extract product, you must be aware of some of the risks associated with the herb and discuss potential issues with your doctor or pharmacist. The use of yohimbe, even by healthy individuals, has been linked to serious side effects, including changes in blood pressure levels, seizure, trouble breathing, paralysis (inability to move) and heart problems. The more yohimbe you take, the higher your risk of severe side effects. Less serious side effects of the extract include stomach upset, dizziness, trembling, difficulty sleeping, nervousness, bloating, headaches and the urgent need to urinate. If you are pregnant or nursing, you should not take yohimbe. Men with a history of prostate problems like enlargement, infections or cancer may not be able to use yohimbe safely. Products that contain yohimbe may make symptoms of certain mental illnesses worse. As a result, don't take the herb if you suffer from schizophrenia, depression, anxiety disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder. Don't use yohimbe if you have liver or kidney disease, diabetes, heart problems or a history of chest pains. It is not safe to combine yohimbe extract with some drugs used to treat depression, medications for high blood pressure, the drugs guanabenz or naloxone or any herb that contains caffeine or other natural stimulants. Talk to your doctor to ensure that yohimbe extract is a safe supplement option for your needs.
