More information about Period Pads

When your monthly period arrives, it’s best to be prepared with the supplies you need. Period pads are a very popular type of feminine care product. Simple to use, period pads come in an array of styles and levels of absorbency to meet the needs of all women.

What are period pads?

Period pads, also known as sanitary pads or napkins, are pieces of absorbent material that are worn inside underwear during your period. Most pads stick to underwear with an adhesive sticky side or Velcro-like tabs. Some pads have wings, or tabs that wrap around the sides, for extra protection against leaks.

Period pads come in all shapes, sizes and materials to fit different types of underwear and accommodate different preferences and levels of flow. Some pads are even designed to be worn with thong underwear. You can also find pads that have extra absorbency for overnight wear. If you prefer natural products, you might consider pads made with organic cotton. Period pads need to be disposed of in the trash. They should never be flushed down the toilet.

How often should period pads be changed?

Most period pads should be changed every few hours, but you may need to change them more frequently if your flow is heavy. Some overnight pads can be worn all night while you sleep.

Are scented period pads safe to use?

Scented pads may cause vaginal irritation or allergic reactions in some people, so you should be careful when using these products. Your vagina naturally cleanses itself and maintains a certain pH level. Wearing pads with extra chemicals and scents may affect your vaginal pH balance.

Menstrual pads vs. tampons

Pads are worn outside of the body, as a liner on the inside of underwear. Tampons are inserted into the vagina. Both pads and tampons are disposable. You should change tampons as directed to prevent infections, such as toxic shock syndrome (TSS). Although TSS can occur with pad usage, it is much less likely compared to tampons.

Walgreens offers a vast selection of period pads in store and online. You can also find an array of other types of period products.
