Ways to celebrate Thanksgiving this year
Clinically approved by Jen Matz, MPH

Since celebrating the holidays virtually or only with immediate members of your household carries the lowest risk of COVID-19, many people aren’t gathering with loved ones in person this year. But don’t let that stop you from celebrating. Here are some creative ways to enjoy Thanksgiving so that the holiday feels special:
- Virtual party. Host an online video party with family and friends. Be sure to include a common element, like everyone makes the same dish or shares a pre-planned musical play list.
- Thankful greetings. Remind those you love most how thankful you are for them by sending a message in a greeting card or letter—in the mail for that extra touch.
- Gratitude list. Gratitude harbors happiness, so make a personal gratitude list for your good fortunes, both in general and this past year. This can also be a family activity or online share.
- Order local. As many small businesses struggle right now, support your community by ordering your meal or desserts from a favorite eatery.
- New tradition. Take time to start a new tradition with love ones, such as a special recipe or creating a craft that repeats every year, such as tracing kids’ “turkey hands.”
- Home games. Learn a new card game or play an old favorite that the whole household can enjoy, whether that be poker or gin rummy, Go Fish or Old Maid.
- Shop online. If Thanksgiving-time shopping is your thing, grab coffee or mimosas and cheerfully chat every online purchase with your buying buddies.
- Parade brunch. Watch your favorite Thanksgiving Day parade on TV instead of in person, starting the holiday with a light brunch before your bigger meal.
- Family activity. Forget the couch and get healthy by planning a time for a group walk, ball game or bike ride.
- Donate time. Offer to help an at-need organization with your unique skills from home. Or safely prepare a plate of food for a neighbor or friend who might enjoy the gesture and meal.
Favorite traditions don’t have to end cold turkey. Spin this year into success by enjoying new ways to celebrate those things for which you’re most thankful.
