Cranberry Herbal Supplements

Cranberries are a very popular fruit in the Northeastern United States. Cranberries are available as food and also as a drink. Cranberries have also been popular as an herbal dietary aid and supplement for bladder problems. Walgreens offers a wide variety of cranberry supplements. These include extracts, capsules and tablets. Cranberry extract is available in a range of doses for your use. Some of these cranberry products may include other ingredients that you may need in your diet. These include vitamin D, vitamin C, and potassium. You can find cranberry products that are gluten-free in many of the formulations.

Research and Results

Both the berries and leaves of the cranberry bush have been used as a folk remedy for a variety of issues. These issues include diarrhea, diabetes and stomach problems. Recent studies have shown additional benefits from taking cranberry. Research has found that cranberries are rich in antioxidants which help protect the cells of the body against damage. They may also protect the body from reacting to cancer cells. Research has also studied the benefits of cranberries for stomach ulcers. Also, cranberry extract may help prevent gum disease. However, more research is needed in these areas. Cranberry seems to prevent infections in the bladder by helping to prevent bacteria from adhering to the walls of the bladder. One study was recently done to review the effects of cranberry products. The study looked at women suffering from frequent bladder infections. Although the results were promising, larger studies are needed to establish these benefits. You should consider all of your current medications before starting to take cranberry extracts. Cranberry products may interact with blood-thinning drugs. Cranberry could increase the risk of certain side effects. These include bruising and interactions with medications. Always talk to your doctor or pharmacist to be sure that cranberry supplementation is right for you. Make sure to talk about all of your medical conditions. It also is important to discuss any other medications or supplements you may be taking.
