Digital Thermometers
Walgreens offers many different types of digital thermometers for purchase in stores and online. Different types of thermometers are recommended for people based on age, so it’s best to ask your Walgreens pharmacist about which thermometers may be most appropriate for your use.
What is a digital thermometer?
A digital thermometer is an electronic device that uses heat sensors to measure a person’s temperature. The temperature is then displayed on a small screen. Most digital thermometers are intended to check for fever but there are other types that can be used for fertility and ovulation tracking.
How does a digital thermometer work?
In comparison to older model thermometers that used mercury, digital thermometers measure temperature much more safely by using heat sensors to detect a person’s body temperature. These devices measure temperature very rapidly, often with a press of a button, and they’re usually powered by batteries. At Walgreens, you can also find batteries for digital thermometers as well as probe covers and other accessories for digital thermometers.
Types of Thermometers
Digital thermometers are usually available as contact or non-contact, which refers to how close to the body you’ll need to use them. There are many options for oral, tympanic (ear), rectal and topical thermometers to help determine if fever is present. Some may require contact with the body, such as the skin, mouth, ear or anus.
Non-contact thermometers use an infrared beam to measure temperature from a certain distance, often aimed at the forehead or temple area of the face. While this type of thermometer may be more convenient and less invasive to use, the reading can be altered by environmental factors more easily, so you should use these devices in controlled temperature areas and away from sunlight.
How accurate are digital thermometers?
Digital thermometers are generally considered to be accurate if used correctly in the appropriate environment. Depending on the temperature site and age of the person, certain sites may be more or less accurate.
How to use a digital thermometer
The directions for using a digital thermometer varies based on each product type and each individual model. You should always follow all instructions closely as provided by the manufacturer. A number of factors can influence a person’s temperature reading and produce an inaccurate result. Make sure that you clean the thermometer as directed and avoid using or storing it near direct sunlight or other sources of heat. To make sure results are accurate, you should wait:
- At least 1 hour after taking a hot bath or engaging in heavy exercise before taking your temperature
- 20 to 30 minutes after smoking, eating, or drinking a hot or cold liquid before taking your temperature
