Frequently Asked Questions
- How will Walgreens ensure safe delivery of COVID-19 vaccines?
We have operational processes in place at every turn to get COVID-19 vaccines to recipients safely. These processes include ongoing training of our team members with updated education and vaccine-specific information, dedicated technicians who will be responsible for the safe tracking and delivery of vaccines, and increased capabilities to handle ultra-cold storage requirements.
- How do the on-site COVID-19 vaccine clinics work?
A Walgreens point of contact will work closely with your organization to help you plan and prepare for the clinic from scheduling to day of preparations. We recommend designating an on-site coordinator to work with the local Walgreens contact to determine date and time for clinic(s), appropriate staffing, hours, room size and any additional supplies required to serve your employees. Walgreens will take care of all vaccine storage, handling and arrive with all supplies needed for the immunizations and required documentation.
- Are organizations required to purchase or provide any special accommodations for storing the COVID-19 vaccines during on-site events?
Walgreens team members will arrive prepared with all materials needed to administer vaccines to employees, staff and students properly and safely.
- How can individuals schedule COVID-19 immunization appointments at a Walgreens store?
Walgreens will provide you with a link to our digital scheduler in which individuals will be directed to answer a handful of screening questions and choose from available appointments at a Walgreens store convenient to them. Two appointments will need to be scheduled to complete the series for Pfizer and Moderna vaccine products. Once scheduled, individuals will receive reminder notifications of their upcoming appointment and can cancel or reschedule at anytime.
- Is Walgreens responsible for the billing and reporting of COVID-19 vaccine administration?
We've ensured reporting and data integration across the end-to-end process from ordering through patient communications and follow-up. Walgreens is reporting to the CDC and state registries in compliance with all HIPAA regulations. Walgreens is also handling all billing to Medicare, Medicaid or private insurers. For those who are uninsured, Walgreens will access the HRSA fund.
- Are signed COVID-19 vaccine consent forms (VARs) necessary for a vaccine to be given?
Walgreens requires each patient to complete a vaccine consent form (VAR) in order to capture patient information and screening questions prior to any vaccine administration. The patient (or person authorized to consent to the vaccination on behalf of the patient) must complete and sign the vaccine consent form (VAR)Opens in a new tab.
- Does a COVID-19 vaccine consent form (VAR) need to be filled out for the first and second dose of the vaccine?
Yes. The patient will be required to fill out the form for each dose to ensure proper screening prior to vaccination.
- How many shots of COVID-19 vaccine are required?
Both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines require two shots to be as effective as possible. The Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine requires just one shot. Boosters are recommended for individuals 5+ who have completed the primary series to help stay protected from COVID-19. Booster shots can be received at least 5 months after completing the primary COVID-19 vaccination series. Johnson & Johnson vaccine recipients are recommended to get a Pfizer or Moderna booster at least 2 months after completing the primary series. A second booster dose of Pfizer or Moderna is recommended for those ages 50+ who received a booster dose of any authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine at least 4 months prior. Moderately to severely immunocompromised individuals 5+ have specific COVID-19 vaccine recommendations. Visit the CDC to learn moreOpens in a new tab.
- Where can my employees, staff or students learn about benefits and risks of the COVID-19 vaccine?
Organizations will receive an EUA Fact SheetOpens in a new tab prior to the clinic to distribute to employees, staff and students. They will also receive an EUA Fact Sheet on site during the vaccination. This document contains vaccine-specific information including benefits and risks, as well as potential side effects.
- How is Walgreens going above and beyond CDC recommendations to ensure a safe clinic experience?
Walgreens will arrive on site with face masks and face shields to protect patients and Walgreens team members. Walgreens team members will follow standard OSHA safety protocols to prevent infection, including handwashing or hand sanitizing techniques, changing gloves between patients and swabbing the injection site with alcohol. These protocols will meet or exceed CDC recommendations when providing vaccinations on site. In addition, Walgreens will be conducting daily temperature checks and following a COVID-19 testing regimen that exceeds CMS testing guidelines. Walgreens requires all participants to follow social distancing guidelines at the clinic and to wear a mask when feasible. Walgreens will provide required PPE and additional face masks to participants.
- Will participants need to present a negative COVID-19 test to receive the vaccine?
A participant does not need to present a negative test result. However, as with all vaccinations, you should not receive the COVID-19 vaccination if you do not feel well or currently are sick with COVID-19. Participants will be screened at the time of vaccination by a Walgreens team member.
- What level of medical support will you provide for on-site vaccination in the event an acute allergic reaction occurs?
Walgreens pharmacists have been properly trained and certified to respond to adverse events and will be on site at all times to monitor all patients. There is an observation period of 15 minutes for all patients and 30 minutes for anyone who has a history of anaphylaxis. The pharmacies are prepared with CPR masks and epinephrine supply in case of reaction.
