What are skin rashes and skin irritations and what are the symptoms?

Skin rashes and irritations, or contact dermatitis, are common skin disorders caused by substances that irritate the skin or cause an allergic skin reaction. There are many causes of contact dermatitis and it may take time and effort to find the exact cause for each person. Common irritants include soaps, detergents, bleaches, cleaners, chemicals, oils, and plants. Allergic reaction may come from metals, glues, household cleansers, leather, paints, latex, chemicals, plants and numerous other possibilities. Contact dermatitis cannot be spread from one person to another. Skin rashes and skin irritations can occur in people of all ages, but tend to affect women more than men.

Symptoms of skin rashes and irritations may appear directly after exposure or may take several hours or more to develop. Frequent signs and symptoms include itching and swelling of the skin, redness of the skin with bright red weeping areas in some cases, and blisters that break open and ooze, crust or scale.

What is a skin infection and what are the symptoms?

Skin infection, or cellulitis, is a common skin disorder that occurs when one or more types of bacteria enter through a crack or break in the skin. Streptococcus (strep) and staphylococcus (staph) are the two most common types of bacteria that cause skin infection.

Cellulitis appears as a swollen, red area of skin that feels hot and tender to the touch. The changes in your skin may also be accompanied by a fever, chills or swollen glands. Cellulitis may appear anywhere on the body or face and may spread rapidly to other areas of the body. Disrupted areas of skin such as recent surgery sites, cuts or wounds, ulcers, athlete's foot or dermatitis are the most common areas for bacteria to enter. If not treated the infection may spread to the blood or lymph nodes, which can be very dangerous and possibly life threatening.
