Itchy & Allergy Eye Medicine

Eye allergies can often be quite bothersome for some people. Luckily, there are many options available at Walgreens to help you find relief.

What causes eye allergies?

Eye allergies occur when the body overreacts to something in the environment that may not affect other people. Some common environmental triggers, also called allergens, include pollen, mold, dust mites, and pet dander and can be found indoors and outdoors. People can experience bothersome symptoms with eye allergies such as itching, watery discharge, redness, puffiness, and problems with wearing contact lenses. These symptoms are caused by the body’s histamine response to contact with an allergen.

Are there antihistamine eye drops?

Antihistamine eye drops are available over the counter (OTC) at Walgreens in stores and online. Antihistamine eye drops may also contain ingredients called vasoconstrictors, which can help with redness in the eye. If you need more assistance selecting a product for your symptoms, ask your Walgreens pharmacist for help in stores or visit Pharmacy Chat online.

Can you use allergy eye drops every day?

Depending on the product, some allergy eye drops may take multiple days to take effect or may instruct use once or twice per day. You should always follow all instructions on the product package carefully and consult with your healthcare provider about long-term use of allergy eye drops, as some products are intended for short-term relief only.

Do eye drops help with allergies?

Eye drops can help alleviate certain eye related symptoms of allergic reactions. Eye lubricants, redness relievers and antihistamine eye drops can all treat symptoms of dry eyes, redness, and itchy/watery eyes. Antihistamine eye drops stop the histamine response to alleviate symptoms. Eye product that contains ingredients such as ketotifen and olopatadine are considered antihistamine drops, and they can be purchased OTC at Walgreens in stores and online.

Other eye drops may provide symptom relief as well for issues such as redness and dryness in eyes. Allergy symptoms may also affect your nose, sinuses, and respiratory tract. You may find additional relief from allergy symptoms by taking oral antihistamines or using glucocorticoid nasal sprays, depending on your symptoms. If you’re experiencing prolonged allergy symptoms, you should tell your healthcare provider.
