What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a progressive disease that leads to increased thinning of bones and risk of fractures and breaks. Osteoporosis occurs in both men and women, but is most common in women after menopause due to a decrease in estrogen, which protects against bone loss.

What are the symptoms of osteoporosis?

Most people don't realize they have osteoporosis until it is diagnosed with an x-ray or bone density test, or they suffer a bone fracture or break. If a bone density test shows bone loss of 10% or more, osteoporosis is often the diagnosis. There is no pain with osteoporosis, and usually no obvious symptoms, therefore it is often called a "silent" disease.
